Cooling method for batteries (LiFePO4), or am I nuts?
Gonna be leaving the rig at my place out in the desert.
Even in the garage, it will get over 100 deg. Was kicking around the idea of making a small cooling unit, maybe using Peltiers, to turn on and just cool the battery box when it hits 95. Anyone try this, or have suggestions? I know it's kind of a wacky idea, but that's what this board is partially about, wacky sh$t! |

For $20 month you can run a swamp cooler in the garage and greatly reduce the room temperature. Put it on a thermostatic cooler switch

Nick, of EV Battery Center, told me long ago, before he passed, to run pack down to about 54V total, disconnect BMS and all other power from the pack and let it sit for six months. No issues and no discharge. You can't set a leaf cell on fire with a torch, he tried.

Re: Cooling method for batteries (LiFePO4), or am I nuts?
I would go the swamp cooler route, but the garage is attached to others, and part of an HOA that won't let us mount anything in the roof.
The battery pack is heavy, and difficult to remove, so I don't want to take it out every time we leave. Also, my wife sometimes goes out there without me, and that's WAY beyond her skill level. There's no easy way to do this, so I'll just have to see how long they last being baked to death. At least I don't have to add water! |

Get a Port-a-Cool unit! Attach a water hose and plug it in. It will run forever.

Goliath, you installed lithium batteries in a western?
Did you buy the batteries directly from lithium boost? What charger are you using? |

I bought the batteries directly from LithiumBoost.
The kit came with a charging/BMS system. |

Re: Cooling method for batteries (LiFePO4), or am I nuts?
I was looking up info on the Chevy Volt lithium cells. they are Lithium Manganese Cobolt and are safe to around 176 degrees F. (could be off a few degrees there, but close). Regardless, the desert won't be anywhere near 176 degrees. I don't know what the LiFePo4 batteries are good for as far as temp, but you can find that online. I can't imagine it'd be much lower than LiMnCo batteries and if you are not using the battery it won't be generating additional heat.
