Default Alltrax XCT500PDS dumb questions

First... A big THANKS to ScottyB for answering all my questions and SUPER quick service! I installed the XCT500PDS on my 2003 TXT PDS and I am very happy with the results. Speed is better and torque is MUCH better. I am still at 36 volts and need to save more pennies for a voltage increase but right now I am impressed.

My first dumb question is now that I have increased speed and torque, what can I expect for loss of run time compared to the old controller. I realize going faster and climbing higher will take more battery but if all things were the same, like speed and distance, will the new controller use more battery?


Second dumb question is programming. I have the software and it looks fine but I don't have a clue about values. I was hoping there was a "default" set of values for fast speed, high torque and economy. The armature amps, battery amps and REGEN amps don't mean a thing to me. Does anyone have a screenshot or numbers to give a better idea? I tried to search the archives but if there is a link for something please let me know. As I said, it works fine now but perhaps it would work better for my needs.

Yeah, there are some posts with screenshots of guys’ setups, but it can be a lot of searching sometimes. Johnnieb loves getting deep into the data files that can be generated from the controller. If you maybe add his name to the advanced search, it might help, but he posts about a lot of stuff. He’s excellent reading either way.

Unfortunately, I’m not the guy to help you, but I do know that Scotty usually programs before shipping, so you’re probably about where you want to be.

As far as your run time, like you said, the logic dictates that since you’re able to draw more amps from the pack, that you may decrease distance. However, I’m sure it’s going to depend on how heavy your foot is, especially from starts. If you have a digital soc (get one if you don’t) cruise one direction until you’re halfway through your usable voltage (see johnnieb soc chart) while monitoring with a gps app. That’ll give you an idea of what the cart can do with the way, and where, that you drive it.


Oh, and go to 48 as soon as you can. You think you were excited about the new controller? Wait until you put some real juice to it.

Thanks for the info. I will do more searching. I hear voltage is the way to go. I may go to the 42 as soon as I can but I really want to go 48 and a new motor. I think 42 will make me happy however.

Fegarex….I got my first cart 5 years ago....I didn't know SQUAT! but needed new batteries, my cart is a TXT that WAS stock drive, but it had been lifted and had a back seat on it. After reading a lot here, I knew I needed to upgrade my entire drive system. SO after only having my cart one week, I tore it down to the frame for a COMPLETE upgrade. although my cart is a SERIES cart, I went with a 500 amp controller and everything that went with it, HOWEVER I had a new 36v pack, just like yourself. I mapped out a course around my neighborhood what was 5.5 miles. After my cart was totally rebuilt and totally charged, I set off on my course. I drove it at top speed all the way around TWICE, then parked it for one hour....then took off again twice more. then let it rest for one hour. after 22 miles, my pack was at 80%. for me, 22 miles is a long ways.....especially or my 36v cart. 5 years later, I made the jump to 48v when I needed to get new batteries...I still have the same or a little better range, AND increased my speed and torque by 33%.

Sir Nuke, That is news I like to hear. I would be real happy with something close to that.
I really just got it hooked up this afternoon and so far I am happy with the torque but I am getting the piggy bank ready for the 48 volt.. :)

Your Alltrax was pre-programmed for maximum speed and torque. Do not reset defaults unless you want to wipe out my custom throttle curve.

Scotty,
I am REAL happy with the programming right now and didn't want to mess that up but I saw some "user 2" settings or something. I am one of those guys that has to fiddle!! I guess at this point I will wait until I can get one of the FN switches.
As it is, the cart seems to be a great combo of both. Not sure what you do but it seems like it has a "light acceleration at first but then ramps up fast. Makes it a little nicer for parking it in the garage.
I am getting about 20 mph and have climbed a whole lot of hills I couldn't before. I check the controller and cables and all are nice and cool to boot!

The user modes are accessible with the FNKS or the ML3. These allow the user to preset performance parameters for 3 modes, like kids, wife, and me or garage, yard, and street. Within these modes you can set acceleration rate, top speed, and regen for each user.
Another simple to use add-on is the FN2. This add-on gives the driver dual knob controls to dial up or down the regen and speed on the fly.

I've been looking at them trying to decide which one while I am saving. Probably the FN2 since I am the only driver and just like to fiddle. Do I need it? Probably not but I want it....
