Battery full charge??

Trying to find out if my cart is at full charge or if I have a battery charger problem or a battery problem. Here’s what’s going on.... The cart seems to have new batteries, not sure but they look really new, the charger cut off at 37.2 volts and won’t come back on when I plug the cart in at this charge. I tested each battery and each battery is showing 6.2 volts. According to the chart I got off of this forum 100% charge for a 36 volt cart should be 38.2. So is my cart ok only charging to 37.2 and not reaching 38.2? According to the chart 37.2 charge is 70% charged. Thanks for any insight.

Your batteries are not reaching full charge. Look for a date stamp on one lead terminal. B5 would indicate February 2015

Before you get too involved I would check the accuracy of your meter. Maybe you could borrow a meter. My 2¢.

I will check for a date stamp. But the volt meter I bought and installed on the cart says 37.1 and my handheld volt meter says 37.2. So I don’t honk it’s the meters. Either 37.2 is a full charge on my cart batteries or for some reason they are leaving 1 volt short when the charger is kicking off.

That would r/o the voltmeter if both of them are that close. If the batteries are truly new it may take a month or so for them to charge up to full voltage.

I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but have to ask,
What brand batteries do you have?
What charger are you using to charge them?

The batteries are Rural King and the charger is a Power Wise charger. Can’t seem to find a date stamp. Or at least anything that I could decipher as a date.

Contact Johnnieb, according to this post http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...omparison.html he runs Exide batteries (they make Rural King batteries). He will be able to tell you if the charger you have is fully charging those batteries or not.

Voltage for 100% SoC (State of Charge) varies between battery brands, but voltages for 90% Soc and under are more or less the same.
100% SoC Trojan = 38.20V
100% SoC Exide = 38.33V
100% SoC US Battery = 38.47V

37.2V is only about 70% SoC regardless of brand.

What charger are you using?

Not charging above 37.2V is waving all sorts of red flags and the same with not coming of when plugged in again.

FWIW: New batteries only have about 75% of their rated storage capacity until the have been broken in, but the At-Rest voltage will be what the SoC charts say, or higher. The data on the SoC charts are the average at-rest voltages for dozens of mature batteries used for testing.

Ooooops, overlooked where you said your charger is a Powerwise.

Powerwise makes several different charger, but I'll guess you have a Model 28115 (Picture attached)

If so, it ought to shut off when the on-charge voltage climbs into the 44V to 46V range and it ought to start when it is connected to a battery pack whose voltage is less that that and above about 30V. Otherwise, the control board is likely to be bad.

You can bypass the relay on the control board to fully charge your battery pack while new control board is on order. Leave the pack on charge for about a day.
