Default New Alltrax simple voltage question.

New Alltrax 400pds controller on 2004 EZGO. With no motor hooked up, I am getting 36.4 volts at battery pack side of solenoid with key off and in run mode. My question: I am also getting 36.4 volts off the controller side of the solenoid with the key off as well. This is without the resistor across the big lugs of the solenoid. Is the 36.4 on the controller side of the solenoid normal?
With key on and throttle pressed lightly, contact closes as normal. I am just confused as to why there is 36.4 volts on the controller side of solenoid when the contact isn't closed.

That should be normal. The XCT supplies the negative to the solenoid when the pedal is pressed.

What you are reading on the controller side solenoid stud is the voltage on the filter capacitors inside the controller. These are kept at the battery pack voltage, or close to it, via J1 Pin-5 to reduce arcing on the solenoid contacts as they close. (The contacts bounce for a few milliseconds before they stay closed.)

That's the purpose of the pre-charge resistor on series controller solenoids and on previous sepex controllers. The XCT does not use a pre-charge resistor.

Johnnie, the new controller came with the precharge resistor and a small diode that goes across the coil terminals. Do I NOT need to install the large resistor across the large studs of the solenoid?

No, you don’t want a pre charge resistor for a Sepex Alltrax.

Actually according to the diagram on Alltrax's website, it does require the resistor.

Jeremy, I have the XCT400 PDS controller. Is that the same as the diagram you posted for a DCT controller?

My apologies! I was incorrect with my previous statement. From what I see on the correct diagram, Luke is correct and you do not need the resistor on the solenoid. You should install the diode though.

Oh, so maybe what I'm calling the precharge resistor(like on the stock Curtis controller) is actually the large diode that is attached to my paperwork at home? So I do need to install it on the big posts?

The diode should be installed on the little posts (coil terminals). This is to help protect against voltage spikes going the wrong direction.
