Grinding noise in rear, cart won't move
My niece took off in out 88 or 89 txt. When we caught her, the accelerator and brakes were all hit at the same time trying to stop her. After that, it made a loud grinding sound and wouldn't move anymore. We've taken the wheels and hubs off, they seem to be ok. The BF took the cover/pan whatever you call it off the differential. It's up onjacks with no wheels now and you still hear the grinding when you push the accelerator. He thinks it's a gear, but they all look like they're turning smooth. What are we missing?

Re: Grinding noise in rear, cart won't move
The hubs are likely stripped. Very common.
If you look at the wheel-end of the axle where it has a castle nut on it. Is the castle nut spinning on either side when you are hearing the grinding noise? If the castle nut is turning but the brake drum is not, you have splines that are worn off the drum. Common issue on Ezgo as the splines are made to be weak enough that the axle never sees stresses high enough to cause a potential snap. Trouble is the splines are a little too weak. You can replace the drum with a standard EZGO drum or you can get an upgraded set from Carts Unlimited that won't ever have this problem again. |

Re: Grinding noise in rear, cart won't move
Be careful though because if you continue to let it grind enough you can damage the axle and that's a bigger repair than merely replacing the brake drums.
You likely also have dragging brakes if you have it up in the air and neither side is spinning but the grinding is still occuring. If the castle nuts on both sides are not spinning and you are hearing grinding, then you have a different issue. |

The hubs and wheels are off and it's still grinding when you tap the accelerator. That was the first thing we checked. I didn't look at the other side, but one side spins, but not at 100%.

I'll try to get some pictures of what we have off when I home today. Maybe we don't have enough taken off.

Re: Grinding noise in rear, cart won't move
It’s probably the passenger side hub. Check to see if the nut in the middle is spinning.

The hub isn't all the way off yet, but up in the air isn't spinning. The splines look fine from what I can see. Driver's side is off. Spins somewhat, but grinds

The other part is the part that would be stripped out.
