Don't worry, I still have faith in you, my charger is supposed to be here Tuesday last I looked, then I'll start on the battery and motor decision.

So is there a consensus on profile with float mode?

Here is the response I got from Lester Electrical - “I advise people to never use a float on a flooded battery as it significantly reduces the life of the battery.“

See table below with the “most common battery profiles”. Looks like the 170ah 8v would use 22251.

I don't feel so alone anymore about warning against floating Flooded Acid Batteries connected in Series.

I never remember hearing you warn that. I typically listen to you, though I can't recall when I started. Seems you've been here a while.

I used to post about it in the beginning, here are some posts in an old thread:
Let's talk Lester Summit Series 48V/19.5A battery chargers.
I posted a few more times about the subject but the overall sentiment of users here was different and since I have no interest in taking sales away from vendors, I did not push it.

I posted a few more times after DPI finally discontinued that old model that kept a 25lb transformer running in order to provide a few milliamps needed for the float mode to work.

If anyone strong disagrees, please contact Lester and not me

There is a fine line between float charging and over charging. Granted over charging is not good.
Lester does still offer float charging for AGM and Gel cell batteries and my 3 yr old Summit 1050w is float charging my Trojans as we speak as it always has and the batteries are not near dead yet.

I must have missed it. Either too late reading - alcohol, or too early - caffeine deficient.

DPI's the one I'm using now. I used a Powerwise on my first set of abused batteries, but made sure I kept them topped off. I got nine years out my old Exides. I'm not sure if I'll get nine out of my T-105s. Not an analysis, as there are too many variables and not enough real data.
