Default Making my 1991 xt881 street legal

I put a new set of batteries in the cart two weeks ago, and decided I only wanted to use them for power to the motor, nothing else.

So I bought a 12V deep cycle (marine) battery to use for lights, horn, etc. and started looking for a place to put it. Under the right seat I find a pair of insulated positive/negative cables. I ran jumper wires from the battery to the cables, and viola, horn, driving lights and tail lights all work. The problem is there is no sign that a battery box was ever in that space. No old welds, not bolt holes, nothing. So now I need to fab something up to set the battery box on, or make a steel tray with edges that the battery can sit in.

I have also replaced the rear bulbs with led replacements, purchased front led marker lights to use as front signal indicators, and have ordered led driving lights, to lower the draw on the single 12v battery.

I am leaning toward fabricating a plate that goes from a piece of angle iron that the kick panel is fastened to, back to a steel cross member about 14 inches behind it. They are not level with each other, so I will have to offset one end or the other.

Does anyone already have experience with this, so my trial and error period is abbreviated??

Robin

Well, I had my welding class last night. I made a battery tray that should work just fine. It isn't pretty but it is functional. I will post pictures tomorrow, gotta go to bed, I don't have the weekend off.
