Voltage Reducer Question

Can someone explain the best way to wire a voltage reducer on a 36 V EZ-GO?

There are 4 wires coming off the reducer and this is my understanding. Please confirm if my thinking is correct.

Input side of reducer (+) Red & (-) Black = Red wire to (+) side of the battery pack and black to the (-) side of battery pack

Output side of reducer (-) Black & (+) yellow = Black to the (-) side of the accessory and yellow to the (+) side of the accessory with a switch on the yellow wire between the reducer and accessory?

Or - if you are running just one accessory item you could put your switch on the input side of the reducer. If yours is just a 4 wire it would not be turned off with the key, so a way to shut off the reducer would be good. In an idle state they don't draw much power, but do draw some.

Sounds like you already have the reducer, so maybe too late, but, if not, I’d get one with a trigger wire. That way you can turn the reducer on/off with the key or another switch without worrying about the current flowing the the switch. I’d also use a fuse block and busbar. You may end up having more than one accessory.

I would put a switch on the input side for turning the reducer off for extended periods.

Fuse block is always good.

Thanks or the fast replies. Yes, I already have the 4 wire reducer. So your recommending putting the switch on the positive side off of the battery pack before it gets to the reducer as opposed to after the reducer?

I put mine on the ground wire going from the pack to the reducer as seen in the pictures. I can turn off the switch and the reducer is off and cant draw power. Once I turn it on it has power to my lights. Very eash and I also put a fuse inline on the power side going to the reducer from the battery pack as well as the power side of the out put to the lights. But I did use the ground wire to connect the switch to turn it off and on under the seat.

Thanks Hyper, the pictures are very helpful. One question- What are the studs for that you ran the wires too in he 2nd picture?

I used a relay that uses a 48v coil. The coil is triggered by voltage from the key switch. The common on the relay is connected to the positive battery terminal, the normally open is connected to the reducer positive input.

This turns the reducer off when the key is off, and back on when the key is on.

In hindsight, I would have just bought a reducer with a trigger from Scotty or David. Cost was just slightly less for my current setup, but is only a 20 amp reducer. I could have gotten the 30 amp reducer for not much more than I spent on the amazon one with the relay.

This also makes 6 relays in my cart by last count, and I might be adding a 7th.

I think I should start buying them in bulk.

They are just terminals I installed as a source of power for any other 12v connections I need to make in the future. I can simply connect a radio or anything else I need 12v for to the terminals very easy.

Thanks guys. I have made some progress getting it wired up but have one issue I believe. I am trying to move the headlights off of the 2 6 V batteries over to the reducer along with a USB port. My issue is when I pull the headlight switch the lights do come on however when switching the switch I added to shut off the reducer, the headlights shut off also. So in a nutshell the switch that is intended to operate the reducer is also controlling the lights. My thinking is that I need to move something somewhere??? LOL
