Default 89 ezgo marathon sparking when put in reverse

Okay, got a 89 ezgo marathon cart the other day, claimed it only needed new batteries, bought new batteries and installed them. Found a wiring diagram online to make sure I had the cables on correctly. Hooked it all up and hit the key. Forward works great. As soon as I shift it to reverse its sparedr at f-n-r shifter and a few sparks at batteries. I shifted back to neutral asap to not cause any more damage, back to forward and it worked.. I have searched on here for more wiring diagrams and I'm not sure which setup I have. I know it's the resistor style 36v system. But one diagram shows the micro switch wires going to one post and the other diagram shows them going to another... anybody else felt with this issue before?
