Default 2013 RXV - 6 month old batteries not holding charge?

Hi everyone,

My 2013 RXV has 4 (12v) near new US batteries when I bought it several months ago. They are 6 months old now. Ran great and seemed to keep a solid charge until about a month ago. We had left it unplugged a few times by accident for a week at a time over the holidays. I also accidentally overfilled a couple of cells a few months ago so it has leaked a bit - never trust an autofill system you didn't install!

In any case these batteries are acting like they are dying already - I hooked up by digital voltmeter to the pack and after charging and sitting over night pack voltage is 50.4. it is 50.9 a few minutes after charging stops. After driving less than 3 miles on the streets it's down to 49.8 or so after 10 minute wait. It drops to 42-43 range on full throttle. Only mod is Bob Boyce reprogram of controller.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Really don't have the $$ right now for new batteries and it seems so wrong to have to do so...

Any chance you have a radio or voltage reducer drawing power? any LED 'bar' battery meter that stays on all the time?

How high does your charger charge the battery pack before it kicks off?

If it's an RXV it's likely got either a Delta Q Powerwise QE or SC-48, so there's no ammeter, just a puny flashing LED light.

I do have a voltage reducer hooked up for the light kit, horn etc. I can disconnect it to see if that's a problem?

Also - I will look next time it charges (it is a Delta Q charger) but last time I was watching my voltmeter while it charged it got pretty high at the end of the charge cycle - like 60 volts I think. It was similar to my old club car 48v series cart. I do have a useless "bar" battery gauge on it but it shuts off with the key switch. Light kit is wired to be connected all the time.

Depending on the voltage reducer it may or may not have a 'on demand' wire to only turn on when a key switch is on, or when the lights are switched on (via relay in the latter)

If it's just one of those little 15 watt ones that only bridge the negative, it can draw some amps, usually negligible.

If it's a 30 amp style with the on demand wire, or has two outputs, one for constant on and one for on-demand, what sometimes happens is someone wires everything to the constant wire and it is drawing power all the time. You're supposed to use the on-demand output for things such as switched radio power, headlights, etc.

Headlights rigged to one battery can cause an unequal battery pack, one battery will be lower on charge than the rest and affect runtime as well as overall life of the pack in general, and on RXVs, can cause controller issues. The RXVs we sell now have reducers added with headlight installs, and normally the kind that only run when the switch is on.

Charging to 60-66 volts is normal. I was thinking maybe it wasn't getting a full charge.

Here's a link to the voltage converter I bought. I have all LED lights so I didn't need very much power. It seemed to only have 4 wires?

That's the kind i actually replace most often mainly because they have been known to DRAIN some battery packs in less than a week, I also have to remove those gimmicky 'power pulse battery rejuvenators' (like gas tank magnets to save MPG, they're garbage) for the same reason.. People wonder why their car won't charge and that's because the batteries are dead. First thing i do if one rolls in and customer assumes their charger is bad is get out the multimeter and find like 25 volts at the mains.

There are some out there that handle 30 amps that have a power wire that you can hook up to the controller side of an RXV solenoid that will only run with the key in F or R, and not drain when not in use. Just make sure you use the switched output not the constant output:

i have a 2014 RXV with the same reducer and did the 4 batteries to 6 battery conversion about a year ago and i also think my batteries are getting weak. My lights and battery gauge only come on when key is on. Also Bob Bryce tuned controller.

will be following this. I wonder if its the cheap reducer???
