Default EZGO mini spool

I decided to do a separate post just on the spool. The spool is just about done, but like I had originally had said, the most difficult parts is going to be getting the splines made. I'm still making calls and seeing what I can figure out, but worse comes to worse, I may have to try to do them myself manually, one spline at a time. Concept is simple, is just a copy of a mini spool for a car. The two pieces I made take the place of the side gears and that's what would get the splines and drive the axles. The 1" square piece of steel keystock in the middle of the two pieces is drilled down the center, the cross pin goes through it and spider gears are eliminated. Instead of only one axle turning, both axles are now turning at the same time. Unlike a posi, there is no forgiveness, going around turns will put a lot of stress on the axles. I'm still going to make my own posi unit and I'll update my other post when I do. I put a wtb ad for an used axle just so I have something to go to a machine shop with or I can ship out a small section with the splines. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I’m being told that having the splines cut by wire EDM would be much cheaper than broaching. I’ve spoken to a few shops and I’m waiting on some estimates. I may have them make me a few splined sleeves, just in case I need to make a few more mini spools. I got an axle on it’s way to me, this will make things much easier when I need to send out a sample of the splines.

How many splines? Do you know the angles? Why cant it be done on a mill with a rotary and v cutter?

It definitely could, but unfortunately I only have a spin indexer, not a rotary table and since the axles have 22 splines, it doesn't divide into 360 equally. The cutter would also have to be custom ground to match the splines. It is my intention to try and exhaust all other options before I attempt to do the splines myself.

Just out of curiosity why do you want a spool on a golf cart?
Preparing to give Plum Quick a run for the money?

I wanted both wheels to turn together and The EZGO limited slip differential is over $400, Plowmans posi unit is $300, so I decided to do something different. A spool is not going to be for everybody. It will put a lot of pressure on the axles when turning, but you just need to take that into consideration while making turns, don't start doing donuts. I started out making a posi unit of my own in another thread and while I was waiting on material, rib33024 was nice enough to link an old thread where somebody made a spool for a Yamaha rear. Well, that's how the making of the spool started.

I get the purpose of a spool just not why it is needed on a gc.
On the other hand I have needed both wheels to spin at times.
