Default '96 EZ Go Charging Question

First of all I am new to this forum and to this cart so please excuse my ignorance.

I have a '96 EZ Go 36 volt cart. The batteries are Trojan T-605. From reading the sticky notes on this forum, each battery has a max charge on each cell of 2.3 volts so the total max for all six batteries should be 41.4. Correct?

That's the first question. The second question has to do with the charger it came with. It doesn't have a name on it but is says that it's a 5 amp charger and looking it up on Amazon, it looks like it sells for about $70. So my guess is that this is not the best of chargers.

So I'm wondering whether this thing is going to turn off on it's own after reaching a full charge and if it doesn't, how many volts would it read if it's overcharging?

Thank you for your help!

There is a requirement in charging flooded lead/acid batteries to supply enough charge current to cause bubbling to stir the electrolyte to prevent stratification. This means that you are going to require somewhere around 15 amps or more of charging current. Look for a new charger that can supply around 15 to 17 Amps. Otherwise, your battery life will suffer.

I second Bob's statement. 5 amps is fine for a float charger, but not bulk.

A "smart charger" is a bit more pricey but will monitor the state of charge and apply the proper amperage and voltage to keep the battery pack in top condition.

Thanks for that! I'll start my research for a new charger. So is 41.4 the max voltage? And anything over that would be considered to be overcharging?

Thanks for your help!

45V +/-1V is typical shutoff voltage for a 36V charger. The overvolt period is what causes the bubbling and electrolyte stirring.

Agreed. Batteries charged with this type of charger only will give reduced performance & fail prematurely. They need the higher amperage to keep the heavy elements active in the battery water, not just sitting stagnate on the bottom of each cell.
