New and need some help

ok.... i'm tim..... i'm new..... i have a 1980 ez-go 36 volt and i have a few questions that possably someone on here can help me with (i hope) .... anyway what i'm wondering is ....

1st. how can i make this thing faster? i got passed by a kid on a pedel bike last night...LOL

2nd. will atv (aka 300ex, banshee, raptor) type wheels fit on this?

3rd. how hard is it to build a lift kit compaired to buying one off the web?

4th. are these 6 volt batterys or 12?

5th. what is the cheapest and best way to get a 12 volt source of power? (for radio, extra lights, neon stuff like that)

6th. will a steering wheel off a car bolt right on?

ok so theres 6....LOL... thanks in advance for the information :)

First off... WELCOME TO BGW! Glad to have you here,

I will try and answer some of your questions.
1. Upgrade to 48 volts. I believe you have a resistor style cart so thats easy. You might want to consider a 48 volt solenoid or maybe even a czonka relay. EMP motors can re-design your motor for even more power/torque. It all depends on what you want it to do.

2. 4 on 4 wheels. Thats 4 inch bolt holes with 4 lugs. The ATV tires may fit. It all depends on size.

3. Building a block lift isn't that difficult as long as you have the skills to do so. Look around on some of our sponsors sites and they all have economically priced lifts.

4. 6 volt batteries. There are alos 8 volt batteries available as well as 12 volt cart batteries in new carts.

5. You can either use a 12 volt automotive battery or tap into 2 batteries on the pack. Tapping into the batteries wioll drain those quicker than the others. And can cause the batteries to be unbalanced.

6. Depends in wether and adaptor is available for it. Adapters are around $20 and up.

48 volt upgrade.

CHeap way:
To upgrade to 48 volts you can add 2 six volt carts batteries and place them in the bagwell area. You can charge with a 12 volt automotive charger and the 36 volt charger.

Right way:
Get 8 volt batts and buy a 48 volt charger along with a 48 volt solenoid. Either way you will gain 20-25% in power.

HOLY CRAP.... i just called batterys plus here and they want $110 for 8 volt batterys thats $660 bux just for batterys.... OUCH on the plus tho i found 48 volt solenoids for around $20 to $30 shipped.... thats not so bad....

why couldnt i take these 6 out and stick 4 - 12 volts in there to get the 48 volts that i'm looking for? then i would have room for a 5th 12volt battery for my neons and radio and stuff

Adding to what Roady said, If your motor is in good shape it should have no problem handling the extra volts, dc motors can run off a wide range in voltage. It's the other parts you need to worry about ie: cables, solenoids, coil resistors, switches, ect. 48 volt solenoid is a must as are some big cables, the other parts need to be in top shape. You can run 4 12v but it will cut your run time badly with a resistor cart. If you use 8 6v batts you'll get more run time (more lead = more run time) but you may need to mount the extra 2 in the bag well if you go this route. You can add 2 extra 6v's at any time down the road to a 36v (6 - 6volt) setup.
The rear wheels off most pre 2000 model Polaris quads have a 4on4 bolt pattern, the wheels bolt right on to carts. (the cart in my avatar is running Polaris wheels)
Depending if you have mechanical skills and at what level you can fab a lift, I believe block lifts are under $100 for your cart so you may want to go that way to save your sanity.
The adaptor will let you use most any aftermarket steering wheel on your cart, i'm not sure if there is a car model that will bolt on without it.

i think i'm just going to add the 2 extra 6 volts down the road then..... as for the bigger wires and solenoid i understand that part but the coil resistors and what not ..... thats where i'm in the deep gray area.... kinda get it but for the most part.... i'm lost...LOL.... think i'm going to order the lift and stuff this weekend for it and theres a polaris dealer here in town so i might see if he has anything laying around that i could snag from him cheap

edit: could i use a 48 volt charger after i add the 2 xtra batterys? insted of charging the 6 with the 36 volt charger and having to use the 12 volt charger on the other 2?
