Default Tie Rod Separation

I have a 1998 txt 36v series cart. It has a drop axle lift kit; I am unsure the manufacturer, it only says "ST" cast onto the spindle arms.

Anyway, my daughter was backing it up yesterday and the left side tie rod end pulled out of the sleeve, allowing the wheel to move independently of the steering. Needless to say that was the end of her taking her friend for a tour of the property.

This evening I pulled the tie rod assembly and what I discovered was the side with right hand threads appears to be a mismatched size I don't know if you can see in the photo, but the threads on the end are smaller than the threads of the rod sleeve. With a bit of force I can slip the rod end into the sleeve past the threads as if it's the next size up. There is no indication of stripped threads in either part. The other end of the rod seems to be the correct size.

I am really not sure how exactly this thing has been working thus far. I have driven this thing all over the property here through some challenging terrain and it's given no hint of being loose.

I plan on getting a new tie rod, I'm not sure if this lift kit used the factory tie rods or not. Does anyone know the length of the factory tie rods?

In the meantime I am considering tack welding the jam nut against the sleeve so we can use it. Any thoughts on this?

If you’re replacing the tie-rod ,and you don’t need the tie-rod end, then tacking it won’t do anything other than let you keep driving the cart. The lawyers and insurance folks can’t read this, though.

I think most folks on here are too young to know what oakum is-
Or, haven’t fixed many old sewer lines - or some of each.

So an old school inside joke? Up Geraldos to the left.

Oakum was used for much more than CI.

Ha! I DO know what oakum is; might even have some around somewhere. I have transitioned to old iron pipe and stuffed it around the fitting.

I'm thinking of just tacking the jam nut to the rod sleeve, so if I needed the rod end I could probably still use it. That being said, I will probably look for the complete assembly as I don't know which component is not the correct one. In fact, I plan to check the other side tomorrow to be sure the same situation isn't going on on the other tie rod assembly.
Not knowing the history of the cart, I don't know how the mismatched parts got together.

Yeah, that's a wild story. How long did you drive it before noticing?

I'd a welded it, since both pieces are sacrificial.

I have seen tie rod ends pul out/ strip if there was’nt enough threads engaged.
Make sure new tie rod end screws in at least as far as the diameter of the shaft when you do decide to replace it.
Lucky it did’nt happen at speed 😊

I have had this cart up and running for two months now. I don't golf... I have a wooded piece of property with trails. I have driven it over downed trees, up hills, down dales, through ruts and mud, and it's never given any indication of being loose.

I just set up the welder. It gets permanent in a few minutes.
