Default Two Red Hot Terminals

Hey guys - I finally got a chance to really test my 48volt converted EZGO electric up in the mountains. Naturally this puts the cart and batteries under a super heavy load while on the hills.

After riding around for about 30 minutes - and while going up a super steep hill, I started smelling something burning. I opened the seat, to find two smoking/red hot terminals (pictured below) - one of which burned the crap out of my finger!!:

These two batteries are suspect - as they had previous terminal damage, and I'm not sure those two in particular were able to hole a full capacity charge, although they each put out 6 volts when fully charged.

See the terminal below - obviously damaged.

Any thoughts on what might make this happen? It's limited apparently to those 2 batteries. Should I simply replace them? Thanks!! StratoGeezer

Were the terminals tight? I'm not gonna comment on touching red hot terminals...

When you replace cables you always need to go back and recheck them every so often. Its just a fact you'll have to ge used to.

You can drill and tap the battery post and save the battery. Heres a little write up I did just for that. Battery Terminal Repair

There's probably nothing wrong with the battery, just a connection problem. Any connection that gets loose or internally corroded creates resistance which causes heat and the melting begins. Usually when you heat the wiring that hot it creates a resistive wire that turns hard and needs to be cut back to the soft part. Best solution is the tap the post as suggested above and replace the cables. As Roady said, check your cable connections regularly and you should be trouble free.
