Default 09 RXV Basic Voltmeter Install Recommendation

Hey All,

I'm looking for the best way to implement this basic digital voltmeter from Automotive Authority. The installation recommends either key switch connection, or a direct connection (what I'm leaning towards).

My question is, can I remove the red, black, and grey wires from the back of the 'Fuel' gage and use that to connect the voltmeter? Or should I be running new leads off the batteries as shown in the installation guide? If so, any guides to the gauge of wire recommended to connect this?

Thanks for your input in advance.

Btw I plan on cutting a small hole in the dash for the lip and have the voltmeter placed directly under the headlight pull switch.

No don't splice into any wires. Spend a little more money and get this one.

Good looking instrument for sure...

For now I might just run new wires and splice in this voltmeter. Closing thread out!

Too late, he's already closed out this thread.

Maybe next one?

Its a good thing I didn't close out this thread just yet then...

Adding an LED digital voltmeter with new wires will toast the controller?

In quickly searching some other threads on this forum report you can connect LED type meters directly to the pack based on the almost nil current draw.

Is this flawed logic?

**Edit: This is extremely similar, if not the same meter available on Cartsunlimited **

Doesn't sound like running dedicated wires to batteries to me, or others.

Can't really close out a thread anyway. Every now and then a zombie post of the walking dead comes up, years later.

Thanks for the feedback yurtle... sorry for the vague description.

I ended up doing some more digging on CG's information on other threads about avoiding splicing into OEM wires/harnesses (to avoid controller damage), and decided to follow his advice to tap off the main solenoid for 48V accessories instead.

I ran new dedicated wires and everything turned over perfectly. There was however about 0.4V discrepancy between measured pack voltage and digital voltmeter readings (attributed I assume to the lower quality voltmeter). I was reading 50.9/51.0 on the multimeter and 50.5 on the voltmeter post-installation. Thanks for the feedback guys!

* Sidenote: Because I used a heated razorblade to cut through the dash some of the blowout lines are noticed in the pictures. I'm going to look into a vinyl wrap or other dash covering to conceal my blade marks :)
