Default Can wire size be too big?

I see people recommending a 2ga wire set for the upgraded controllers, my question is if I have extra 1/0 welding cable laying around the shop would it hurt to use the larger wire?

Thank you
Donald

There are 2 minor things to consider with huge sized wire, but I wouldn't let it deter you from trying. 1- at some point, larger wire just wouldn't fit in the areas available, and couldn't make the corners & turns to connect to controller and f&r. 2- larger wire is heavy, at some point, the weight of the larger wire literally "outweighs" the benefits.

In your opinion would you think that using the 1/0 wire would be to large for my txt cart? I am planning on upgrading controller and batteries but may just stay with the 6v and go up to 42 like JohnnieB, I like the speed and distance that he gets out of his 42v cart.

Thank you
Donald

If you are going 42v I think 2 gauge should be sufficient. I run 42v, 500 amp controller and a aftermarket motor at 2 gauge

That sounds like everything that I want to do with ours, just trying to utilize wire that I'v had laying around the shop for years.

Why do you go with an extra 6v battery instead of using 6 8v and go up to 48v? is it to have more amp hrs and a longer range?

I'm sure that I'll be asking more question as i start upgrading other things on our cart.

Thank you.

Donald

Free is good, taking into consideration size, weight, turn radius, as mentioned above, for routing. I didn't match existing, but custom made each cable. Remember the motor moves in relation to all other electrical components.

I guess that's the part that I don't know yet is if this wire will be too large to make some of the connections and turns that need to be made. I have been working every since I found this site and still haven't even verified what model I have yet, I believe it is a txt series but it will be Thursday before I can verify that. Not much time in the evening when you work 12 hr shifts and live 63 miles from work.

Then the fun will begin, with all of your help of course.

Thank you
Donald

Take the cable with you and see if it can handle the worst cases. I'm pretty sure I saw another cart here with 1/0. If you have a series, with the FNR by your legs, having linkage to a mechanical switch. that may be your worst cables, as they have to make a 90° turn +/- and all physically fit in the space. If you have a series, all four motor cables will be 1/0, while a SepEx will only need two 1/0, and two smaller ones.

If it were me, I'd definitely try to make it work. I don't remember mine, but it seems like it was around $100 in cable, but that may have included lugs and heat shrink.
