93 EZGO 36v 9mph uphill
Hello everyone,
I just got a 1993 EZGO (i think marathon) from a family friend and when i got it home and drove it around it barely goes uphill. I clocked about 15-16mph on flat ground but only get about 9mph going uphill. Measured the hill at it is a 3-5 degree grade which doesn't seem like much. I did the typical steps i could find on other forums. - New batteries with about 3 charge cycles on them now. - Checked linkage from pedal to armature of ??? and it is tight. - Cleaned all connections before the new batteries were put in. - New speed controller was put in a few years ago i'm told. New controller is a 24v-36v controller with current rated at 275amps. Model is Curtis 14378004. I did not see anywhere that it can be adjusted. Looking for any suggestions. I can do troubleshooting but not trying to drop anymore money into this thing than I already have. Thanks everyone -Kyle |

Re: 93 EZGO 36v 9mph uphill
Welcome... Electric motors make the most torque at the lowest rpm. Consequently they slow when they hit a hill until the load and the power produced match.
One thing you can check is the battery pack voltage when the cart is going slow uphill. It should not be more than 6v below the at rest voltage. 9 uphill sounds okay. I've seen alot slower |

Re: 93 EZGO 36v 9mph uphill
New batteries shouldn't be pushed too hard.
https://www.cartsunlimited.net/battery-break-in-.html They will improve capacity after a few dozen cycles. Beyond that, you may not get much more without spending more. Are the tires larger than stock? 18" is stock and larger tires give you more speed on flats, but kill you on torque, which you need uphill. Place on jack stands and see if the brakes are dragging. |

Re: 93 EZGO 36v 9mph uphill
Thank you for the input
I don't think the brakes are dragging since i can push it on flat ground pretty easily. But il try and put it on stands and spin them by hand. I also measured the resistance of i don't know what is but it goes to the motor controller. 0 ohms with no pedal, 6.4k ohms when its pedal is to the floor. |

Tire size is 22" so they are a little larger.
Just took a rolling volt reading. 38.8V idle. Going uphill drops to 35.2v. |

Re: 93 EZGO 36v 9mph uphill
If you follow the battery break-in instructions I gave you a link to, your new batteries may go faster after a few dozen cycles.
