Default anti theft ideas

I picked up a cart a couple weeks ago that would not run. After a little work we are now terrorizing the neighborhood at a stiff 12 mph. Come winter I'm looking at a total rebuild and a 20+ mph target for beach use. I'll end up spending 2K to 3K and would like input on how to protect the finished project. I've seen the "CLUB" mentioned on here but with doing a frame off build this would be a perfect time to address the issue of theft. Let me hear your suggestions....Thanks

I have installed dozens of "Theft Switches" on golf cart. Basically a toggle switch place in the solenoid activation circuit. This switch is hidden so only the owner and myself know how to start up a cart. Also a heavy logging chain wrapped around a telephone pole is effective

well there are 2 different things to worry about.....

#1 would be some one just being able to get in and drive it off.

#2 would be some one being able to use a trailer and load it up and drag it off.

as far as #1 goes, there are lots of things you can do. one thing to remember, all STANDARD EZGO keys are alike...most with work on ANY EZGO cart.

1. you can get a key switch that is special
2. place a hidden "kill switch" that will disable the cart even of you leave the key in it. (this is the easiest and honestly the cheapest what to do it)

as far as the big #2....unless you have a place to chain it up to through the frame...there isn't much you can do, as if a thief wants your stuff bad enough, they will get it.

Truer words were never spoken. Doesn't matter if its your cart, your car, your house - total security is an unobtainable goal. However, reality is that you just need to make your a little more difficult than someone else's (sucks to be them).

I had rigged up a system that used a brake light switch, wired to close the circuit when the parking brake was released. Disabled when the ignition was switched "on" but kind of the euro-siren Hi-low wail, pretty loud, if the parking brake was released with the ignition off. That, an aftermarket ignition switch (not golf cart specific) and a chain is about as safe as I'm going to get. Still not impossible, but more noise and hassle than most thieves would want to deal with.

to add to this:

#1 is really easy - just get a key switch for something that isn't an ezgo (and i might suggest not a $5 ignition for a lawnmower either, since those can be started with a screw driver). I have used polaris ranger key switches $15, john deere gator key switches, etc.

#2 could also be a simple as a toggle switch hidden, or a remote controlled "car alarm" style switch.

A piece of chain from the arm rest to the steering wheel is a decent deterrent and if you leave the wheel cranked all the way to one side they are unable to push it on a trailer.

I found myself getting ready to sell an RXV. So here is what I did. I called the local sheriff's/police/law enforcement to see if they had fyi instruction for placing it on a corner of a busy intersection of a large golf cart community. Here are their suggestions along with my ideas:

1) I bought locking wheel hubs for the fancy wheel.
2) My cellular service provider had a great offer on a GPS tracking device. That came with and unlimited data plan and the ability to set the timing that it automatically reports from 10 minutes up to 5 days. It also has the capability to detect when it notices a change of ambient light. I put it in my locking glove box, and lock it.
3) There are switches as others mentioned
4) I looked for an area that had security cameras
5) The cart is garage kept
6) I was only keeping the cart in the for sale location during day light hours
7) I called my insurance company to get the cart and parts insured

That's what I remember off the top of my head

I would just park it in the garage. If it's in a locked garage and gets stolen, most homeowner's insurance covers it (check with yours to verify).

Get an insurance policy on the cart and keep every receipt along with the bill of sale from when you purchased the cart in a safe place.

As said, all (pick your brand, ezgo, club car, etc) keys are the exact same. You can use a key from a 1988 ezgo in a 2018 ezgo, they're identical. They do this because a majority of golf cart sales are for fleet (industrial lot, golf course, hotels, etc.). One key fitting every cart helps with key loss. You can get a unique key, which aren't exactly "unique" but at least the generic ezgo key won't fit. I like to use ATV/motorcycle key switches but that's just my preference.

Actually I forgot that I bought the uncommon key switch for my RXV. The key itself has a 3 digit serial # on it. So not any key will work it. My RXV key will not work in my 2five. My 2five key will not work in my RXV. An the original RXV keys I got when I got the cart no longer work in the RXV.

Redhawk sold that switch for @ $30.00

This was a no brainer as far as I was concerned. 2 for 1. I new the switch would be working and the key would be restricted.

Then there is always the S&W theft deterrence system.

Of course I prefer LSWCHP to the FMJ shown in picture.

I have 4 of these running around. (That's either a 48" or 52" fence). Nobody and nothing gets on my property, and if they do they dont leave their car. FedEx just honks and if were not home theyll drive close to the porch and chuck it lol.
