Default 2013 RXV Curtis Problem

Hi Everyone,
Chasing some idea’s, got a issue with a RXV using a curtis 1206AC-5201 controller that will just crawl a couple of feet then go out on Stall Fault. I had just installed some new LED front lights, discharge test & serviced the cart. I had test driven at the workshop ok & had dropped it back to the course & gave it a big run (plus play a couple of holes), it when 200 meters flat out, then it shuttered, I stop took off again it when half that distance & did the same, turned off & on, then it went half that distance to where I struggled to drive it up the ramps when retrieving. The only new faults in history were Comms Supervision & Encoder Supervision once I put the reader on back at the shop. As long as you just apply the accelerator it will creep it forward then take my foot off the accelerator it crawls forward then stop with brake, then change direction & again just touch the accelerator it first what’s to go in the old direction before going in the right direction, there are no active faults until you got a couple of feet in a direction or if you plant the accelerator down, then the stall fault appears on history. Then I put it in tow & push back to the hoist and it would intermittently stop & lock the brake on & comes up with Encoder Supervision on the fault history, I need some idea’s, I even checked the program parameter against another controller, both the same??? Cheers pete

Probably the speed sensor.

I concur, the little inductive sensor on top of the motor, goes to a four-pin connector, and mounts with a T-30 Torx screw. Common failure point too. I can test them in my area with an oscilloscope to properly rule them out, since bad pedal group sensors can cause this issue as well. Handheld will have you chasing your tail. I've seen errors such as Throttle Wiper, Stall Detected, Contactor did not close, Main Welded all end up being that sensor.

Thanks USGI & Nick,
I'll check them out, the motor seems like it's very loud & noisy, thought it was the brakes locked on bit it isn't

RXVs are AC drive, so they usually whine louder than DC carts do.

Thanks Bob,
But it sound like gravel when it creeps forward or reverse, I have order a speed sensor, just hoping its not the encoder bearing, postage time up here are shocking, it's quicker to order from the states than from the bottom of Australia, cheers pete

That sounds like it may be a bearing then. 2013 should not have a bearing encoder.

a Curtis RXV (13-up) won't have an encoder thank goodness! It's got a little sensor on the top of the motor held in with a T-30 Torx screw, and plugs into the harness there with a 4-pin connector. That's the only thing using a 4-pin connector, the others are a two-pin for the temperature sensor inside the motor and another two-pin for the motor brake.

While easier to replace, these inductive sensors seem to fail quite often compared to the old encoder bearings.

That grinding noise is often the way it behaves when it's in limp mode due to bad encoder/sensor. The symptom is the same for both the older Danahers with Bearing Encoders as well as the Curtis with the inductive speed sensors.
