Default 2003 series cart build

I have a 2003 EZGO series cart that I have to build for my sister... So obviously can’t afford problems down the road that may wreck family functions... She wants it to go 20ish mph and she’ll be happy... what would be the most dependable controller for that task?

Truth is the least you do to the cart the least amount of problems you will have. Keep It Simple

Everyone always gets pointed to an Alltrax.

My 2001 series cart did 22-23 when it was at 36v, but it had a factory upgraded controller and motor. It’s the same setup they were putting in the carts with the factory rear seat. If you’ve seen Kernal post about it, that’s the setup. He knows the specs on the controller and the motor, but I don’t remember. Those are the only 36v series carts I’ve read about on here getting that speed. I don’t think a controller will get you any more speed, just increased torque. Maybe one of plum Quick’s motors? Otherwise, I think you’re looking at a voltage increase to get up in the 20’s.

I fully agree with that but 13.5 mph just won’t cut it ... and it has to have enough torque to crawl up on the back of the pickup

I have an Alltrax on my 03 PDS and it’s perfect but I’d kinda like to retain the environmental cover if at all possible and the stock motor will have to suffice

the absolute truth of the matter is if you leave it at 36v....and keep the stock motor, no mater what controller you put in it....your cart will run 13..5 mph. That is just the nature of the beast with SERIES carts. HOWEVER, to make her cart go 20 mph. you have a few options what will get you there, but these three things will be required to get you to 20 mph and do it reliably. Which is what you want to achieve.

#1. you will up-grade the Controller, Solenoid, and F&R Switch
#2. up-grade all the high voltage cables to a minimum of #4 ga, #2 is better.
#3. get a HIGH SPEED MOTOR OR up-grade from 36v to 48v

FWIW, my EZ GO series cart with an Alltrax SR48500 controller, 2 ga. wires, HD F/R switch, HD solenoid, running 48v and the stock motor tops out at 17 mph on 22" tires. It does have a lot of torque though!

How well do the EZGO tops hold paint?

That’s been all over the map, as far as success. There are threads about it in the body/paint section. Guys have had different results using the same methods. The tops release an oil?? that makes it tough to hold paint. I went with what I thought was the most thorough prep: thoroughly washed with dawn soap and a scotch Brit pad, followed by bulldog adhesion promoter. I then put down krylon or rustoleum for plastic, but can’t now remember which. That didn’t hold all over so I found a YouTube by a pro that said to take a torch to the top to release more of the oil, then follow the above. That worked better, but still not great. Finally a buddy who’s company builds displays had his paint shop do it. Supposedly they have some adhesion promoter we’re not supposed to have in ca. and that is holding up great.

I only tell you all of that to reinforce the idea that you need to do the research and prep well. And, even with that, some have been more successful than others. Guys have seemed to have good success with bedliner.
