Default Lights go out once accelerator is pushed past 50%

Hello,

I have a Bob Boyce enhanced Express L6. Last couple weeks I've used it 2-3 times in the snow to pull my kids (very light sled and kids) and after some time, the lights go completely and totally out only when the accelerator is pushed beyond approx 50%. When I let off or ease back on the accel, lights come back on.

Is there some type of cold weather shutoff? It's not a loose wire, because it's 100% correlated to how far I depress the accelerator..

Here'es my setup:

The batteries don’t have as much in them in the cold weather. Do you have a digital meter that gives you an actual reading, or just the graph style? If you don’t, I’d suggest hooking a dmm to the pack and seeing what it says when the lights cut out.

I bet your pack voltage is dropping too far when under load, causing the DC converter to "call it quits".

Thanks. Am I doing damage to the batteries when this happens?

You are not doing any damage to your batteries but you might be damaging the voltage converter... Or do you have the lights hooked directly to batteries?

I haven't re-wired anything, so I assume its pulling through a converter off the pack?

Weird thing it, cart operates totally normal - and this happens much quicker than I would have expected. Maybe 30-45 mins outside

As the temperature drops, the normal chemical reactions going on in the batteries slows down, while your power demand does not slow down. This causes battery voltage to drop in each battery. The reducer is less voltage tolerant than the controller because I set the controller to allow more of a voltage drop in the battery before setting a low voltage error. The reducer does not have that option. When the weather warms up, things will improve.

Remember this... before the reprogramming, when you pressed the throttle pedal to the floor, the current to the motor was limited to 70 Amps maximum. Now it can deliver the full 350 Amp maximum that it was designed to deliver. Being a bit easier on the pedal will reduce power consumption.
