There is more than one way to do this and I'm not gonna say what is right or wrong... You can research the topic and read all you can get your eyes on about 72v systems... One thing you may need to change....... is banks

I had a friend that ran a 72 volt system in one of his cars. He got a car with a blown out engine (this is a full sized car) and bought a large 72 volt motor and 72 volts worth of batteries.

The total price was in the ~$4000 range for the project, and the car with the blown engine was $500. This means that $3500 of the project went to conversion...

The basics of what you will need is:
Two chargers to charge all the batteries. ($~200)
All the batteries. (12vx6 batteries=72=~$700 for batteries, if you buy good ones.)
A new motor to handle the extra voltage. ($~500+)
Modification to the carts power system to handle the voltage. ($???)

Basically all you will keep is the frame of the cart and the tires, very little else will stay the same. When adding a (gas) big block engine to a cart, it is pretty simple, the only issue is making the engine fit and hold into the cart, but other then that nothing else really needs to be replaced. I don't know very much about 72 volt systems, but I think that if you really NEED more power, you may want to sell your eletric powered cart and buy a gas machine... you can trade in your eletric for a gas on craigslist (sell it and buy a gas machine)...

As for 36v to 48 volts... that's easy. Just buy another battery and wire it in correctly. From what I know there is no reason to change anything else.

and there in lays the problem, if you don't know, don't be telling others how to do it please. try to use the search again and find out about the 36v to 48v converting before advising others

You're correct. That's why I said, "from what I know." I am not at all knowlagable on the design and modification of electric powered carts, nor do I know what is required for a 48 volt conversion, though I did feel that I should share my friend's project to make a 72 volt automobile.
