Default '78 36V Series model

The cart I am having trouble with is a 1978 EZ-Go 3 wheel 36V, I believe a series cart. I need a concise and clear wiring display for the solenoid. This cart is my dads. They put in new batteries and the thing ran then stopped. One of my sons changed the solenoid, I had a new one sitting, and now I do not remember the correct wire placements.

A little history on this thing. I bought it a few years ago for my dad. The previous owner had the MS-2 bypassed as something failed he said but the cart did run fine. Since I got we had to put all new batteries in once. Well the other day the batteries would no longer take a charge. I bought 2 new solenoids a few years ago. It did need 1, I bought 2 in case 1 was needed for diagnosis. At any rate the solenoid needed replaced after it quit.

Now 1 of my sons put the other 1 in after it ran with the new batteries and then stopped. Now it's dead. I did get a new MS-2 and wired the thing according to the owners manual diagram. The motor in the this has the posts labled: A1, A2 and S1, S2. The problem there is when I started checking S1 had been ran the battery - (neg). What I need is the correct placement for the wires at the Solenoid and the Forward/Reverse switch. As to the Solenoid the book says to place the + cable on the large post side, they are both the same size. When I went through the diagnosis steps for the control circut the voltage did go up as the pedal was pushed down, starting at 0V with the speed contact at the 0 posistion.

The diagram for the Forward/Reverse switch shows the studs in a standard box form and compared to the switch studs this would be laying it either 90 degrees left or right. I am not quite ready to condem the motor. When I checked for voltage it showed just over 1V at the A1,A2 and S1 terminals of the motor, where it should have been 0. It said if full 36V was present motor problems.

What I could truly use is some pictures of the same model and year cart under the seat, very clear and clean pics. As well as any help or ideas. I am going to check for continuity at the motor connections and do a force test to make the motor run, if it will.

Any help would be appreciated.

An automotive solenoid cannot be used on a golf cart. They will simply burn up and quit functioning.

Here is a diagram for older

Thank you. I found the same diagram on another web site. However to that it did help. The solenoid is an automotive type design, however it is the one for this buggy and not an automotive application.

At any rate I followed that diagram along with the one inthe owners manual and I think I have it wired correctly now. At least the resistor coils aren't getting cherry red and no wires getting warm.

One thing I am having issues with is the placement of the S1 and S2 cables from the motor. In the diagram it shows S1 at the rear of the motor, mine is opposite with S1 at the armature end and S2 at the bottom.

I am fairly confident that the MS2 switch had failed. I have 36V up the point of testing that. I have it going in but not coming out and back to the ignition switch to fire up the forward/reverse switch. I have replaced any and all questionable wires/cables and ends as needed.

I am getting a new MS2 and another solenoid on the 12th and then I can finish testing the control circut, as long as the ignition isn't gone. Then on to the power circut and hopefully the motor is failed.

Thank you

The resistor are supposed to get hot unless your running wide open. At WOT the resistors are out of the circuit.
