Can I use a different type of 36v solenoid?
Hello everyone.
I have a 1990 Textron Ez-Go Electric Cart. Ok, this thing was rotting away in the yard of some wrecking yard. I bought it because I have a 80s gas cart and this one had a great top, front clip, seat backs, and tires which I needed. I figured it was worth the $125 I paid for it just for those items. Well, it didn't have the bench seat on it and it was rained in. I got my gas one running good from ideas and posts from this forum, so thanks to those guys wherever you are. Now I want to fix this electric 36v one up. Well, I took the motor out, cleaned it, made some new plastic square washers for the connections, greased it and it worked good with the 12 battery test. I put the motor back in, I brushed and cleaned every wire and every connection. I then hooked it up to 3 car batteries and it ran when I jump the solenoid but wouldn't unless I did that. Ok, Solenoid is bad. I took the solenoid apart and man that thing was wasted away. Before I go trying to rewire the thing most likely wasting my time besides just wanting to do it, I have to ask, "Can I use a different solenoid other than the one that was made for it?" Why couldn't I get one of the $20-35 36v solenoids and replace it with one of those instead of the $60+ ones. My diode is still good so as long as I put it going the same energy flow direction it should work. I think. SO I need some input on that. Also, I tried searching the forum for a question like this and I couldn't find anything. If there is something somewhere, please forgive me and point me to the right spot. Thanks... Chad |

Yes, any 36 volt golf cart solenoid with the correct # of large and small terminals will work.

Solenoids are rated for voltage AND current. Be sure the solenoid you select is rated for continuous duty also.

Re: Can I use a different type of 36v solenoid?
If your solenoid is silver colored and has 4 terminals (2 big & 2 Small) on the side it is likely the OEM # 27855-G01 ....... Nivel #1106 or 1110
The #1125 has silver contacts which cost more and last longer |

Re: Can I use a different type of 36v solenoid?
Ok, well my solenoid is black, it is made of a composite plastic, with a metal strap around part of it. It has four copper posts on it, two large, two small and a diode running between the two small ones.
I thought about using a car solenoid, which I already have a few of and dropping the current between the two small posts with a resistor setup, or wire loop, but I don't know what that would do, so I just thought I would get a cheaper 36v solenoid from e$ay or someone here. Now that you know what kind of solenoid I have, does that make any difference? again it's a 1990 Textron. |

Automotive solenoids are not continious duty built and will work long enough to get you down the road and leave you kicking cans waiting for a ride when the internal coil fails.
Really need to go ahead and spring for the correct solenoid and be done with it. |

Re: Can I use a different type of 36v solenoid?
Any selonoid rated for 36 volts, and the right amount of amps is fine. The phiscal layout doesn't matter except for mounting them. You want a 200-400 amp in rush with a 100-200 amp contious use if possible.

Re: Can I use a different type of 36v solenoid?
I just replaced the 36V solenoid on my cart for $22.40. Bought it from the local EZ-GO dealer. Seems to be working fine.
