No, its not necessary, but it my personal opinion is that it is easier in the long run and you can get a nicer job. It's only going to take me about 5-6 hrs of re-assembly time to do mine and that is taking my time.

It will take you longer to tape everything off than to pull the body.

I did not personally paint my cart, however, I did remove body and cowl and delivered it to my painter. Once the job was done, he told me it would of been much easier if left on the frame....I had quite a bit of body work. He said it was difficult to work/prep. because of the flexing nature of the material. Charged me extra....a$$hole! Anyway, if I did it myself I'd probably leave it on and tape the hell out of it!

I've done it both ways, it's alot easier to paint the body on the cart. you can save at least a days worth of work doing it this way. if you take your time and are careful with the tape, you can have it look as good as any that's been taken off.

surprises Like the kind where that alien thing pops out of the guys chest in that movie, or maybe theres a badger living under the cowl kinda surprise
If your completely re-doing the cart then sure, or want to figure out how they're made, take the body off. but for just a paint job it's a lot more work

Surprises, like when you bump into the cowl later on and it shifts ever so slightly and the old color shows through the new space. Or, when you remove all the tape and masking paper and find overspray on your trim pieces and floor mat.

Or, the alien thing is no fun either, LOL!

When I paint bodies, I remove them, Usually the cart gets a diff body all together due to I have about 10 just sitting around, I paint one and than swap. I like removing the body, de to it gives me a good way to steam clean the frame and touch up any rusted spots for extra dough.

I have to admit it does take a full day to remove and reinstall a body, but having no paint lines and no surprises if the body shifts, just looks cleaner to me. Plus I send my bodies to my sister store which is a top of the line body shop. The painter would rather paint them off the cart anyway, He says it is easier to paint standing straight up than bending over painting toward the floor.
