Question Over Charging?

I just installed a new set of Trojan T-105 batteries in my '96 TXT. I am using a Power Wise charger. I also have a digital volt meter installed on the cart. I am seeing 45.4 volts and approx. 5 amps at the end of the charge cycle. Does this indicate an overcharge of the batteries? The cart had old batteries in it when I purchased it.They would not hold a charge. I checked the SPG and found all were in bad shape. Given the price of new batteries, I want to keep these in good shape. The charger has writing on it that indicates a board was replaced in the past. Could someone have replaced the board with a 48 volt board. I'm not sure if this charger came in 48 volts. I read in one post (Power Wise Charger search) that voltages can run high near the end of the charge cycle. Does this harm the batteries?

All is well. Your final charged voltage should read somewhere between 42 and 44 volts right after the charger shuts off. The fully charged resting voltage is around 38.4v.

45.4V is not bad for end of charge while the charger is still ON. I am concerned about the 5 amps. With new batteries it should be 2 amps or lower. When the pack nears 45V the amps will be up a bit but then the amps should drop unless the voltage climbs higher.

How long does it hold 5 amps at 45.4V before it shuts off?

I will have to check. I got concerned about the high voltage and disconnected the charger. I will get accurate readings and let you know.

Basic rule for GC batteries if they are getting hot shut the charger down and figure out why. They will get a little warm especially when it is 100* outside. If they are cool you are OK but always good to monitor them like you have been.

Nate the Powerwise operates on the range of the 5amp end of charge, that is correct. Even on new batteries. I see no issue here being those new batteries.

I have a 42v Lester Charger on my cart and it finish charges at 53.8v with a 5 amp finish rate as well. My batteries are 5 year old Trojan T-105's.

If you guys are all getting 5 amp finish rates then that must be what they are set at. I hope I did not mislead any one on that point, I probably should note I don't follow typical setups and don't use factory wiring or chargers. Some of you know this but new folks wouldn't.

5-amp finish rate is good for factory then.

I finally got the time to stay with the cart and monitor the voltage. The charger shut off below 1 amp. With the old batteries, it shut off around 5 amps. The ending voltage now was 46.4 volts. That seems a little high to me. I verified my meter with my Fluke digital and my Simpson analog meter. Voltage readings are accurate.
