Torque for PDS
First, I would like to introduce myself and thank the sponsors for this informative site. I have a lifted PDS with 23" tires, limited slip rear end, 4 guage cables, Alltrax 400, reworked stock engine from PQ, and am running on 48 volts. This cart really screams on flat pavement (28 per the gps which is too much for the stock brakes with regen off), but I use it primarily as an off road vehicle.
As mentioned above I have a PQ motor but feel as though I need more torque. I have read great things about the Beast motor (D394) but from what I gather it only comes in a series wound motor. I searched threads but could not find any information about a similar high torque motor that is SHUNT. I have, however, found the D1162. I have no idea how this motor compares to the beast as far as torque. The information claims it is high torque and is rated at 12.0 Non-Peak HP @ 1300 Rpms. I have learned since reading here and another site that I made a mistake getting a PDS for extreme riding. I want to stay away from a gear change if possible, but when the cart is loaded down with driver, sometime 2 passengers, and gear, there are some issues driving in the hilly terrain here in south MS. I am afraid extended torture is going to fry my motor as it is. I have smelt a burning smell and it was way to hot to touch at times this winter when extremely loaded. I am sure I may have jeopridized the life of the motor under the conditions, but I bought it to use it. I just want to avoid being stuck in the woods one day. If there is any other suggestion, please advise, but my use for the buggie requires the extreme conditions. Thanks again. Last edited by golferjw1; 07-09-2009 at 02:48 PM.. Re: Torque for PDS
Am I to assume that nobody on this site has any experience with the D1162?
I am guessing since it is comparable to the Beast which is supposed to be so great that it will definately out perform my PQ motor which has not met my expectations, even on 48 volts. Also as a side note, I painted my cart this weekend in a manner consistant with this site and also a duck hunting forum. It turned out very well. I will inform of how well the plastic rattle can paint adheres once it has time to reach full cure (7 days), but I will post pics in the mean time once I have some on the computer. Thanks for the anticipated help on a motor selection. |

Re: Torque for PDS
E-Z-GO GE D1162, 36 Volt, High Torque, (DCS/PDS, 1996-Up, separately excited) DC Electric Motor
This is a HIGHER TORQUE separately excited electric motor for use with E-Z-GO 36 Volt electric DCS (Drive Control System - 1996-00) and 36V electric PDS (Precison Drive System) vehicles for TXT from 2000 to Present. Motor is a separately excited version and has the ability to utilize regenerative braking with this system. Motor is rated at 12.0 Non-Peak HP @ 1300 Rpms. For use with golf carts, Freedoms, 2 + 2, and ME2 with DCS or PDS electrical system.. Motor has a female 19 spline coupler and is for use with the Dana differential (used since 1989 on electric E-Z-GO's). This separately excited motor is not compatible with any other series or fleet cars made by E-Z-GO. For use only in a PDS system with regenerative braking. This is a non-stock higher torque motor and will NOT work with your stock controller. This motor will require installation of a Higher Amperage Separately Excited Speed Controller to further compensate and add to your torque, which would be in some cases compatible with this motor. Please call for specifications. For many high performance motors and controller upgrades, you may also need to upgrade to a Higher Performance Solenoid Contactor Relay as well as install a 4 Gauge Performance Power Cable Kit. We've also recently added Performance Solenoid Resistors and Diodes properly sized for these larger current applications. GE Part # 5BC49JB1162 According to this you need a controller also. |

Re: Torque for PDS
The D1162 is a reccomended motor with the DCX 400 and up. They actually test those combos together so they work together well. If you need more with that motor your going to have to get a bigger controller. THe 400 is basically a stock replacement with some additional power. Thats 12HP PEAK with w 500 amp controller. I would definately go with a D&D over anything else on the market for a PDS cart.
400 amps with D1162 motor is flat land and mild hill combo 500 + amps is same as above plus steep hill combo |

Re: Torque for PDS
I have a DCX 400 currently in my buggy and am running on 48 volts. From what I gathered from your post Roady, the DCX 400 is the smallest I need to use, but it should work? Meaning that I do not have to upgrade further than what I have right now. I thought since I was on 48 volts that it actually made it where the motor would need less peak amps which would mean my existing DCX 400 isn't all the way at the bottom of the allowable spectrum. I am still trying to figure this out, I just know I would like more torque in certain instances and would like to utilize my existing DCX 400 unless the best option is to trade up and still use the PQ motor.
If there is a better option out there with my current setup please advise. Thanks for your responses. |

Re: Torque for PDS
I think you need to call the Steens and find out what their motor needs for more torque. I bet you are going to have to upgrade to @ least a 500 amp controller or even a 600 to get more torque. Most of the motor's I have gotten from them are speed motors not torque motors.
