8v batteries - Which one's to get!?!?
Hi All!
My first electric project...Have a 96' bone stock ezgo txt. Currently a series 36v but planning a 48v upgrade. Hoping to be in the 18-20MPH range after the 48v upgrade w stock motor, eventually after i get it registered i will do a motor/gear swap. Here is the planned spec for now: Not lifted 12inch rims but stock tire size of 18" 4ga or 2ga cables HD 48v selenoid Alltrax AXE400 or 500amp Advanced DC Fleet stock motor (new bushings...maybe) New 8v Batteries Schauer 48v charger I did some research on batteries but they all have small capacity difference at a big price. Any ideas, recommendations or personal experience regarding decent battry w decent runtime at a decent price??...hehe, i know i cant have all 3 I live in florida w mostly flat environment and dont drive the cart daily. |

Re: 8v batteries - Which one's to get!?!?
Battery choice turns into a real pissing match around here.
Hands down the Trojans are the best but they also cost more than any other ones about $125 Exides are usually the next choice for about 20% less with a reported decrease in life cycle. Energizers from Sam's Club are the cheapest, about $77, with somewhat equivalent specs for about 40% less than Trojans and a similar life cycle to Exides. I have 6xGC-2 Energizers in my boat dated Feb/02 on a smart charger and they are still almost as good as new. The ball is in your court as far as choice goes. I'm doing a 48v upgrade next year and am really having a hard time justifying the Trojans. T-875 Trojans $125 x 6 = $750 GC-8 Energizers $77 x 6 = $462 |

As with anything else ppl have preference...i mostly see trojans everywhere but they are pricy...but this being the heart of an electric cart it might be a worthy investment.

I like the Energizers from Sams club. Cheap and so far dependable. My cart isn't a daily driver; but I can criuse the campgrounds all weekend or go wheelin for a day and still have enough to get home.

Re: 8v batteries - Which one's to get!?!?
i had a set of sams batteries that lasted 6 years the big drawback i had was the connections seemed that the lead was softer burned off a couple of terminals and gad to repair them as with an thing proper maintenance is the biggest factor also have you considered 8 6v instead of 6 8v you will get more runtime from the 8 batteries

Re: 8v batteries - Which one's to get!?!?
I had 8-6V batts for a year and a half and sold them and they are still going. The 6-8V batts I have now are about 3 months old. Battery maintence is the biggest part off battery life no matter which brand you chose. The seat on the cart serves 2 purposes: #1 A place to sit #2 The part of your cart that has to be opened atleast once a week to check everything out. The seat should not be a lid for a time capsule

Re: 8v batteries - Which one's to get!?!?
Speaking of maintence, i got this maintence recomendation with a part i recently purchased...check it out, how accurate you guys think this might be:
"Quote" Want your golf cart batteries to last longer: You can make your batteries last up to six years if you discharge them to 50%. Batteries discharged to 50% will last twice as long as batteries that get cycled to 80% of capacity. A battery cycled to 5% of capacity will have a shorter life thatn one cycled to 50% capacity. Shorty cycling your batteries will shorten their life because lead dioxide tends to clump onthe positive plates rather than be deposited in an even film. Depending on temperature on load, a typical round of golf will use bw 25% and 40% capacity. Occasionally running them down to 80% or recharging them at 25% will not damage your batteries. If you follow this formula you will not over charge, short cycle, or cause low voltage damage to your batteries. Get a batterly state of charge meter to accurately monitor the charge on your batteries. "End of Quote" |
