Smile Solenoid on 1999 Electric EZ-GO

Hi. I thank those who helped me thus far with my EZ GO golf cart. Again, I am new to a golf cart, but I'm having trouble with it.

Here is the situation:

The six 6V batteries all appear to be in working order. I checked them with an analog voltmeter and they all show over 6 volts.

The cart ran for a while but then had a few of instances when it stopped and just made clicking sounds. Charging the batteries seemed to fix the problem a couple of times. Another time, just letting the cart sit for a couple of days seemed to make it run again. Now, it just won't run.

Here is what it is doing -- when you depress the accelerator pedal, it makes a clicking sound, on the passenger side rear. If you press the accelerator pedal only slightly, it will try to move forward. If you press it more than just slightly, it stops trying to move forward and only clicks. The further down you depress the pedal, the faster the clicking sound.

I tried looking for the solenoid, according to a digital image one nice fellow sent me. My solenoid is not there. (Under the seat, against the passenger side frame, close to the linkage from the F-N-R lever.) I removed a plastic cover and looked.

There is another plastic cover, further back along the passenger side frame. This box is mounted at about a 45 to 60 degree angle. Actually, this box is where the clicking sound seems to be coming from. Does this indicate that this box contains the solenoid? If it does, I'll need to buy a 8-10" or so rachet extension to get the 4 bolts out so I can open the container. There is not enough room to get 3 of the bolts (2 closest to the frame, and 1 on the bottom) without it.

What do you think?

Again, thank you to those who have tried to help!!!

Yeppers, that inclined box contains the solenoid AND the controller. The first plastic cover you removed (single bolt on top) was the F/R switch assembly.

Thank you...I guess I need to buy an extension.

Did the situation I described to you appear to be a problem with the solenoid? What else might have the same symptoms? About how much is a solenoid for a 36V electric cart? Thanks again!

Clicking solenoids are usually an indication of low voltage OR an impending solenoid failure. A new unit is less than $50, any of the site sponsors can hook you up.

Just a heads up Matt, make sure you disconnect you're batteries before you start putting sockets and wrenches around you're solenoid, controller, and F&R switch. And if you leave the cover of the F&R swich it will give you a little more room to work on the bottom two controller cover bolts .Good luck

Some models the selonid is mounted to the back side of the controller and a pain to get to. I second the cables. Make sure you @ least take the ground cable loose on the 36 volt pack.
