EZGo..old as the hills

Hello All,

I bought an old EZGo single front wheel cart about 2 years ago. It has 6 batteries and we replaced 4 of them. They all show to be full and pulling a full load.
We've looked everywhere and can't find any numbers to tell us what age it is.

It ran pretty good but not long all this time. My wife used it as a kid cruzer. Ran down the road and picked up the grandkids.

Today we charged it for 24 hours, it tested all was well with the batteries. We cleaned the poles...the wiring is old but everything worked before. Some of the nuts are frozen on and I can't get them off to rewire..so I left them until now.

We road it out of the driveway and it got slower and slower until it *locked up*. We could barely PUSH it back into the driveway with both of us pushing.

We don't have anyone in our area that works on them, so we're trying to trouble shoot and fix it ourselves.
I rebuild antique tractors so I thought I would give it a shot..but I don't know anything about electric motors.
I think I'm over my head so I came here.

First off...WELCOME TO BGW! Glad to have you.

Is the motor at a 90 degree angle from the axle or parrallel with the axle?

Either way...if it locked up it could be brakes, differential, or the motor locked up. Jack the cart up and get it on jackstands and start checking the rear end out, brakes, etc... You sound as if you are mechanically inclined so you should not have any trouble pin pointing the problem. The rear axle and brakes are very similar to cars and trucks....only smaller. If you unbolt the motor first but BE SURE and label your motor connections. If the nuts are rusted soak them with some WD-40 or some sort of rust buster first. Try not to spin the actual terminal but just the nut because you could break the connection inside the motor... If you have any questions at all please feel free to ask.

Two wrenches, one on the post, one on the nut.. I repair more motors than necessary every year because people make this mistake.

How old are the two remaining batteries? If they are 4 + years old, I would highly recommend replacing them as well.

Pull of the hubs or spray in the hole and spray a crap load of cleaner in with the brakes, they get full of dirt and the brakes hardly work and it makes it slow down some, spray wd-40 on all the connections and rewire it, sounds like its started arcing somewhere and fried a wire or maybe something with the speed control.

We plugged the thing in and it started working. I'm going to slowly rewire and rework it. It's still good for our use.
