Cart dies....but goes fine after it sits a few minutes.
I am still trying to figure out the problem with my 2000 TXT/PDS, it has a 4 inch lift with bigger tires. Last year I had my controller replaced and it seemed to be fine, this year as I am going on a drive (especially at slow, constant speeds) it dies right out on me, if I let it sit for a couple of minutes it will take off just fine like it has no issues. I contacted the people that installed the controller and he tells me the batteries are to blame....I have checked them with a load checker and yes there are a couple of cells that check somewhat low but doesnt seem like this would cause this symptom. I am wondering if the controller, or something similar, is over heating? OR is it the batteries? They are two years old and not Trojans and I know there life is limited, I hope to milk the batteries the rest of this season.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks |

ONE bad cell in ONE battery can cause the symptoms you describe on DCS/PDS systems as has been posted on here and other sites.
Is the controller very warm/hot to the touch when it happens? Does the controller throw any fault codes when it happens? |

Interesting....it seem hard to understand that one bad cell can cause this symptom. To your question though, yes, when I lift up the seat and feel the heat exchanger it feels very very warm but I dont know how hot is too hot? As far as the fault, if you are referring to the audible beeps, no, it is not doing that.....it used to do that before I had the controller replaced.
As I mentioned, I know the batteries are not up to 100% but if it is a controller issue, I want to have it replaced while it is still covered by warranty (if it still is). |

Think of it like 6 extension cords plugged in end to end, if you unplug the middle one, the power stops, even if the rest of them are plugged together. |

Re: Cart dies....but goes fine after it sits a few minutes.
I have had this happen in the past with a pds cart. With the larger tires and speed chip, just poking around at very slow speeds will make it heat up and stop. My personal cart will do the same thing. I just let it sit for a few minutes then go along my merry way at a higher speed. This is not unusual when you are creeping along using a hand-sprayer or something like that. This has happened to me and I was lucky enough to find out from an honest mechanic. So, the way I cured my problem is I drive it faster! Hope this works for you and I think I would try this before investing in new parts!

ssdane brings up a good point. The stock PDS controller doesn't take well to the extra requirement you've put on it via the larger tires. It is exacerbated at slow speeds. You wouldn't be the first to experience thermal shut down on a stock PDS controller with lift/tires/rear seat etc.
You might try changing the performance option to something other than Freedom and see if that helps any. |

Re: Cart dies....but goes fine after it sits a few minutes.
Is your reverse buzzer still hooked up? Are you hearing any "beep" codes?
I'd bet that your controller is doing EXACTLY as it was designed to do, which is to go into Thermal Overload and shut down due to excessive heat. PDS carts are not meant to be lifted, without replacing the stock 300 amp controller with a larger unit. True, the new ST Sport electrics use the PDS system, but they come with a Factory 400 amp controller. Your issue is going to be the stock controller - Time to fork over some cash and get an Alltrax 400 amp with PDS Interface... |

Re: Cart dies....but goes fine after it sits a few minutes.
Wow....the replies on this string are exactly the same thoughts I am trying to figure out myself as well...and my main question. I did have a new controller put on last year and it was replaced with a "stock type" controller. If I knew then what i know now, I would have bumped it up to a higher amp controller.
But the issue is still unclear, yes? Is it a battery issue or a controller issue? To SSDANE's point, it and if it is thermal overload, do I accept the nonsense of it shutting down and deal with it? Is the controller devective? Or do I follow the opinion that the batteries are bad and replace them? Lets face it, I am ok with spending some money on this but I dont want to throw stupid money at it. I would like to be sure first. Thanks for all the replies by the way! |

Also, to Mikes question, the reverse beeper is still hooked up but it does not send a code....that issue was fixed, that is why I had the controller replaced in the first place.

Re: Cart dies....but goes fine after it sits a few minutes.
Just a thought....If battery voltage is low, It may cause a low voltage / high amperage problem that will cause the controller to heat up to the point it shuts down. On a lifted cart, the stock controller on a ezgo has always given us problems. Best advice is to fix battery issues first...even if its just swapping in some good used ones for the ones testing low. Then look at upgrading controller. Maybe an Alltrax unit.
