Default Controller Heat Warning Signal sounded off this weekend.

History.... My wife and I were trail riding this weekend. We didn't have extreme hills, but some were pretty nice ups and downs. The beeper went off... beep beep beep.... beep beep....beep beep beep....beep beep (3 beeps, then 2 beep, then 3, then 2)
I was told that was the controller overheating....

BTW... That code would make sense, since my wife and I had been trail riding for quite a while on it. Does this hurt it or is it sounding out before damage is done? We went and parked it after the code rang out. It just means to allow cooling time before hitting the trails again.... I hope.

PGGROVES---- Typically on the controller environmental cover. Sometimes the label is missing/torn/destroyed/etc. If not there, look in the owners manual. Continuous overheating will eventually kill the controller.
I opened this thread to keep from high jacking my own other thread.

Now, for more questions regarding that issue....

I have the “freedom chip” installed in my controller now. So, is that the primary reason it would overheat and cause the warning to beep, lessening the torque? If I put it in the mild hill or steep hill mode, would it be less likely to overheat? The main thing we do is ride gravel roads and trails, so the speed chip is probably overkill for my riding habits. I bought it mainly to say I have one. What do you think will solve my heating problem… short of replacing the motor, controller and/or gears?
Will the changing of the chip likely solve the issue?

BTW, Thanks PGGROVES for your input.

Alltax 400 amp with PDS interface. Get it now before you're getting towed home later!

OK, so you have the "Freedom" chip but your application requires more torque because of terrain. Does this sound close? Yes? But you now want this vehicle to perform in different terrain and for extended periods of actual pedal time, yes?

Remember, this vehicle was originally designed for short quick spurts of use over a period of 3-4 hours on reasonably smooth terrain and grades and mostly on hard surface paths.

Your controller is giving all the amps it can under the driving conditions you described. To the point where these amps heated up the controller to the point of thermal cutback which means the controller was hot enough to shut itself down or die if it did not. How many times can you do this? I hope you'll let us know!

Get rid of the freedom chip. It will help some.

I took the "Freedom Chip" out for now, to buy time. I'm already planning on an upgraded controller. I have to get that rear seat in first (that is the upgrade the wife wants first). I broke the news to her that we'll probably have to get a new controller before long, because we've almost ruined this one. (okay, so I'm not telling it completely accurate but she doesn't have to know that right now.)
Thanks for the info, guys.
