Default Removing Brakes

I want to check my brakes and have pulled off the tires. How do I get the Hub off? It is stuck on pretty tight. Can I use a crowbar to pry it off of the axle? Is there a trick? Will I destroy the insides if I pry it off?

Sorry but I am new to carts and will be installing a 5" lift in the next couple of days and want to inspect the insides of the brakes while I am at it.

First make sure the hill brake is not set. Then remove the cables and back off the star adjustment wheel from the back side of the backing plate. Hopefully, this will let the drum slide off. If not you may have to get a puller, heat/ torch, large mallet and a lot of cold beverages. Good luck

Ezgo brake drums can be some of the most frustrating things about a golf cart. If you live where things get rusty expect the drum to be rusted to the axle splines and a real bugger to remove. There is a shoe adjuster access hole in the drum. with a flashlight find the adjuster at the bottom of the wheel.

Don't make the mistake that i did. My batteries were dying quick and speed was down. Turns out the brakes were sticking and need adjusted. I used a gear puller and pulled the drum. Separated the pad from the shoe in the process. If I knew better, I could have just adjusted the brakes using a screwdriver and inserting it in the access hole at the bottom of the drum. Rotate the drum to the bottom until you see the adjustment part. It has notches for a screwdriver.

Do I need a puller if they are not rusted? Does that nut and cotter pin need to come off?

You may be going where you don't need to go That nut and cotter pin is torqued to 70 or 170 ft pounds. Why are telling you how to take this apart? Why not just adjust the brakes and move on

I think the shoes are worn out... and the cable is adjusted all the way... so moving on is not really a good plan. I have not really looked too close when I had the wheel off a while back. I didnt exactly deserve a rolleye... I know on some old mopars that nut and cotter pin has to come out to get the drum off. I have not looked, so I asked...

EZGO's need to be set at 85 ft lbs. Unless you have a compressor and air tools, leave the hubs on!

I have a full fab shop... My question is simple, if I need to throw shoes on my Marathon, do I need to remove the nut, etc. Thanks.

Yes.

OOOps. Sorry I didn't see where we sidetracked to a Marathon. Thought we were still on the TXT. I don't know how a Marathon is constructed.
