Default 36 to 12 Volt Reducer

Installed this reducer tonight. Only have light kit running on it. The reducer makes a load humming noise. Is it supposed to, not liking it to much.

Thanks in advance for the help, Bryan

They can hum, depends on how they reduce the voltage. What is the output rating?

It is a 25 amp and the light kit came with a built in fuse holder and a 15 amp fuse. Can you recommend one that does not hum. That sucks, it is pretty load.

Thanks, Bryan

I'd bypass the reducer and wire your lights to 2 of your 6v batteries.
IMHO reducers are over rated. The draw from lights is almost nothing (10%) compared to the motor.
No reducer, no hum, no problems.

The only reason I went with a reducer was that I read a few post about battery wear using only two batteries for the twelve volts. Repeated charging on the two batteries would wear them out quicker. What is your feeling on that. I will be running a light set, radio, and maybe a horn.

Thanks, Bryan

I installed a class 31 12 volt battery to run all my accessories off of.

It's not a simple answer. The solution by bnall05 is certainly a good one.
Consider what you do with your cart and what your power needs are.

If you drive your cart mostly with lights on and a radio, your power draw from that alone will be about 15 amps +/-.
2 Trojan T-105's will run that load for 12.5 hours before the batteries are depleted.
Your motor draws on average around 100 amps which is about 7 times as much as your accessories.
You battery pack with no accessories operating will run with a 100 amp load for about 1.4 hours.

When you are charging your batteries, the charger puts an equal voltage/amperage to the whole pack and any batteries that have a higher voltage than the lowest battery will be subjected to a slight overcharge until the lowest battery has charged. IMO this is negligible and nothing to worry about.

As an aside, EZGO does not use a reducer or converter to power their accessories, they use 2 batteries in the 36v pack.

I have done many carts either way. I have used the 2-6 volt batteries and then I have also used a voltage converter. When I use a converter, I use Astron 4812-12 or a 4812-20. Both are silent, have 30-56 volts input and provide a CLEAN 13.8 volts.

I have been running a 12v tap off my pack for years and my batteries stay within .05v of each other. I used to shuffle the batteries around each year to "spread" the load, but my battery spreadsheet says it's a waste of time. Everyone's situation can be different.
