Default Safty Question before I change my cables

I have an 88 ezgo resistor cart. I am planning on replacing the 4gag wire on the batteries and replacing the wires that go to the resistor. I also bought new contacts for the speed controller/wiper. Can I just turn the switch off and start from battery one and make my way around the cart and end with the wiring up the speed controller and resistor ? I just don't want to get bit/shocked by any current. I am new to carts, so I am sorry if this sounds like a silly question. Just trying to keep the medical bills down

aloha

One at a time is great. Just leave one of the battery cables that join two together completely off until the job is all done. This way you will not have "juice" in the "system"
