Default This is killing me!

I'm all over the planet with my decsions on how / what to upgrade on the 02 PDS.

I talked to EMP - WOW...nice guys over there! He says (and I can't believe this) go ahead and change out the controller without touching the motor. Also said that the stock motor would handle a 500amp controller. If I still want more speed - he'll build me a motor.

I talked to Alltrax - he said that adding a 500amp to the stock system would kill the motor -that it couldn't be done. Also told me that with a 36V system getting 24 or 25 would really be pushing it and likely couldn't be done. He told me that I didn't need anything other than a 400.

I talked to D&D - another really nice guy there! He told me that the 500amp controller and 76-51 motor would be a pretty good combo. And could get mid 20's with a big increase in torque.

I'm looking for a cart that will meet the following criteria:
1) Mid 20's to low 30.
2) Ability to do so sustained over all terrains (I live in FL - not a lot of hills). Right now the cart is an 18mph stock with a freedom chip. Hit the fairway and that 18mph decreases SIGNIFICANTLY - same with any small inclines.
3) Have enough torque to get there QUICKLY! I'm not looking to pull a wheel stand but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if it did.
4) Have enough run time to get me through a round of golf.

Accomplish this for $1K. Tell me what to do please.

Not many companies advise you away from their products. Take that into consideration. I'm not a genius on the topic, but I can't see why a 500 amp controller is going to blow your stock motor.

The other guys on this board may know a solution, but from my experience your best bet at achieving that price is to go buy 1000 lottery tickets and hope you win to have enough to upgrade your car.

Gonna be hard to do for a $1000. Be close but no banana. Call EMP back and ask him what the cost including shipping will be for a motor. You will have to find out the shipping there but they will handle back. When you figure out the cost of the motor with shipping subtract that from the $1000 then take the remainder and get the biggest controller you can afford.

Chuck at EMP is an engineer....he has worked for GE and some others developing motors. I don't think he would steer you in the wrong direction. They are very nice people to deal with.

I kinda agree with altrax on the 36 volt thing....36 volts is gonna limit you more than the rest of the components.

Alltrax 500 and a 48V system with the stock motor (for now) and new solenoid would likely get me to where I need to be.

The last part of the equasion is a charging system for the 48V. I will only consider a single plug charger for it....

They make some pretty decent 48 volt chargers in the sub $300 range.

I keep hearing about controllers being too big and it will burn the motor up...I have yet to see one burned up from too big a controller. Not saying it CAN'T happen just never seen it or heard about it on any of the forums

Hijack! What do those larger controllers do to run time?

I'm having the same problem. One of the site sponsors is telling me he can get my 2005 pds up to mid 20's just by installing a 500amp alltrax controller and upgrading the battery cables to 4g? He said you could leave in the stock motor.

That will be great if it works, will it?

In my experience - and for the carts that I have built - a 500a WILL cook the stock motor. How long that takes.... who knows.

However - I have yet to see a cart go any faster with the addition of a higher amp controller.

Amps = torque.
Volts = Speed.

Thanks for the response Blue Chip. Seems like more than one person is saying that the new contorller (500A) with the new wires will give the extra speed. I understand the Volts/Amps difference in tourqe and speed but it seems like it may be worth it. How else can I speed the cart up without spending too much?
