Default Overcharged batteries

I bought a cart from a guy said it was in "excellent" condition, 00 EZGO TXT 36 volt with June 09 batteries. Well that is the furthest from the truth. Seat is rotted out, missing hinges, f/r assembly stiff needed 2 or more hands to shift, headlights not working, parking brake missing the return springs, rough body, rusty bed, and one thing after the other. It was a thousand mile round trip for us to pick up the cart so we got the lying jerk down in price another hunderd and bought it. I went through the entire cart when I got it home yesterday and its a good thing because some hack job mechanic must have been doing the work on the cart. The rear axle nut on both sides were left finger loose with a cotter pin being the only hope of the wheels staying on and its a wonder nothing stripped. Anyway my question is about the batteries being overcharged. They were about 7.4 volts each for an overall of about 44.5 volts. I dont know they last time it was charged. It has the standard 36 volt 25 amp automatic charger. Whats the normal voltage range for these batteries my chart says 6.37?

Good question about the over-charging. While it's so cold out, just about every time I pass the cart, which is about once a day, I unplug and re-plug just to top it off. I hope I'm not hurting anything. I wouldn't think it would take a charge if there's no room in the battery for a little more.

Your batteries in a rested condition after charging should be around 38.2v.
While the cart is charging it will finish charge at a rate of about 2.6v per cell or 46.8v for a 36v pack (7.8v per battery).
If you measured your voltage just shortly after the charger shut off, I would say it's normal.

The finishing stage of the charge is designed to condition the batteries, your batteries will boil if you keep plugging it in with a full charge.
Once it's charged, it's charged and all the finishing stage does is boil off water and cause deterioration from finish charging at a high voltage.
Continual charging will shorten your battery life.

Thanks for the info Doug. Its been at least 5 days since it was last charged and I have even taken it for a short ride too before the voltage reading. Maybe its my volt meter though because when I first got it home I was trying to figure out why the head lights wouldn't work, checked the batteries and I swear they were all in the 6.7 range and the 2 batteries the lights wired to were 13.5 volts combined. Then later I came back and they all showed a higher 7.4 voltage, even this morning checked again to make sure I wasn't halucinating but it was the same 7+ volts. What should I do, ride it to get the voltage lower and then plug it in monitor batteries?

Weird.
A couple of things to check, the meter against a known source. Try your car battery, should be around 12.7v.
Just out of curiosity, see if all your batteries are 6v not 8v (3 holes not 4).
Measure your final charge voltage when it drops down to 2-5 amps, should be around 46.8v.
Check the battery charger for it's voltage rating, make sure it's not a 42v or 48v charger.
