Cables overheat for 2 reasons:

Dirty connections
Loose connections

Is corrosion present?
Are the cable old and brittle?
Are the lugs in poor shape?

An '87 with original cables needs a new set NOW! I prefer 6g Welding Cable for it's low resistance, flexibility, and longevity.

Absolutely NOT!

That cable is gonna get so hot it will melt the battery terminal. Fix the cables, or prepare to buy more new batteries.
