Default Adding lift kit/tires on a slow cart

Last summer i bought a 1991 electric Ezgo shuttle type (6 person) golf cart. The cart was already slow. Slow to start but when you got going it didn't go too bad. Its really low so I was looking a putting on a 5" block lift kit as well as 22" or 23" tires.

My question is. With putting on larger tires i know it will run faster because of the bigger diameter, but is that going to be more strain on the cart ?

Would you say that I should look at the batteries or could it be the motor that I should look at replacing? The guy that I bought it from said the batteries were only 4 years old ???

Sorry if these questions sound really newbie like. I'm new to this cart thing.

I would address the slowness issue before adding tires / wheels? If the batteries were 4 years old last summer, I would suspect that the batteries are about gone. If you add bigger wheels, I think you'll be disappointed with the performance. I'd look into batteries first...

that cart will only do about 11.5 Mph to start with. you need to upgrade batteries then move to #4 or #2 wire. is it 36 or 48 volt?

first off, check your batteries and cables. What brand batteries are in your cart. Running larger tires will speed up your cart but you will loose any bottom end torque you have. you need to address the speed issue before any lift/tires are installed.

I would recommend new trojan t-105 batteries, 4 ga. cables and than send your motor off to EMP (site sponsor) to have it tune up.

EMP wouldn't touch the motor on my ezgo limo.

Didn't EMP tell you no because you wanted it to go 25mph? Or is my memory bad too?

I just got 2 back from them and he told me they will modify the motors per your specs within reason. So if you wanted to do more than what they thought was safe then they probably wouldn't do it.

im getting 20.3 on the stock motor and big tires. can chirp those big sobs when nailing it from a stop. is 3-5 mph too much to ask for? both the other major builders say they can come up with 10-15% more torque and 28 -30 mph with no prob.

Question? Do they make a 2 speed tranny as a kit for electric carts, hi/low selector?

emp offers a two speed motor. switchable with a second FnR switch. this gives you torque for a strong takeoff and allows you to switch while moving to the high speed windings of the motor.

And away we go!!
