Marathon Charging Problems
We just acquired an '82 Marathon that came with my grandmother's condo when she bought it five years ago. The carts has been sitting since she bought the place and she never tried to charge it or use it. We just brought it over to our place and are trying to see if it will take a charge.
We aren't sure how old the batteries are, but they don't look too old. They are very clean and all the connections are clean. We know they were already in the cart when she bought her condo. They are Trojan T-105s and are completely drained and dry. The original charger came with the cart. We filled the batteries and plugged the charger in but we can't tell if it's charging. The needle on the gauge on the charge hasn't moved after a few hours. Should the charger make any humming sounds when it's on? It's silent right now. If you can't tell, we really don't know much about golf carts but would like this for running around the neighborhood. Thanks! |

Re: Marathon Charging Problems
you will need to charge two batteries at a time with a 12 volt charger[if you have 6 v batts] you do not need to disconnect any batts to do this. the reason is the charger needs to read approx. 24 volts from the batts to start charging. kirk

Re: Marathon Charging Problems
You can determine the age of the batteries by the stamping on the battery post. The letter corresponds to the month and the number to the year (eg. B5= February 2005 or possibly 1995 in your case). Battereis are typically good for 5 years if maintained properly. Use only distilled water to refill them. If you have a multi-meter you can see what the voltages are of each battery. A fully charged 6V will show about 6.38 volts DC.

Re: Marathon Charging Problems
If the batteries were completely dry - they are toast. You need to purchase another set and not waste your time with those you currently have...

Re: Marathon Charging Problems
I agree, you have a combination of 2 deadly sins. Never let the battery plates be exposed to air and never let the batteries sit drained for extended periods of time.... They are toast ....time to start battery shopping
