6 or 8 volt
Just bought a 97 Ezgo 36 volt cart, BATTERIES ARE DEAD. Should I budget for 6x8 volts or stay with the 36. It is to be used at hunting camp on dirt roads that always have some mud holes. I'm going ton lift it 5 - 6", and use a 24" tires for mud.

Re: 6 or 8 volt
If you can budget the upgrade go for it. Your 36v lifted cart with big tires will ALWAYS be gutless I am a fan of running the stock Series 36v motors on 48v
You will need a charger, controller, solenoid, & batts. |

Re: 6 or 8 volt
You might add another $700 to upgrade to 48V on top of the battery budget. You will need controller, solenoid, wire set, and charger. If you are lucky you can pick up a good used charger for $175. Good luck it is well worth it.

Even if you have a PDS and the wires to the motor are already four gauge, you should replace them so they are all new... |

hunting4fun, why not 8, 6v batts. more lead=more run time. the limited run time was always a problem when I used a electric cart for hunting. it's the biggest reason I pretty much have gas carts now. |

Re: 6 or 8 volt
By what I understand, the change from 6 to 4 gauge wire is the bases for any upgrade whether for torque or speed.
A problem with going with 8 volt batteries is if your charger goes out you have no means of charging the batteries. But with 6 volt batteries you can chage a pair at a time with a regular car charger. If you are going to add two 6 volt batteries you have to decide where you are going to put them before you can change over to the 4 gauge wire. Ross |

So, I'm wondering, the 6 gauge cables being all brand new and from the golf cart shop, should be okay for connecting battery-to-battery in series, or not? The configuration I inherited when I bought this cart was 6 gauge in series and 4 gauge from starter to battery, charger to battery and FNR to motor. The charger outlet cable was gawd-awful. Not only was it corroded, the cable strands were broken nearly all the way through. Considering the condition of the electrical components, I cannot imagine how the seller was even able to start this thing, let alone drive it, but I actually saw him riding it! |
