Accessories wiring question
I'm getting my '84 Marathon cleaned up pretty well, but am discovering that the wiring was somewhat messed up. So, I would like to ask your opinions on which batteries to put the accessories wiring on.
I learned that the analog voltmeter I have should use the 3rd and 4th batteries and that I should switch out which batteries I use every few months so as not to cause these batteries to die out sooner than the rest. ????? What I'm wondering is: which batteries do I use for the headlights and taillights? And, do you agree with what I was told about the voltmeter? Thanks. |

Re: Accessories wiring question
The correct way is buy a voltage reducer... they draw from the total pack. Anything else will draw 2 down more than the rest and eventually cause an imbalance which will result in 2 batteries asking the charger to stay on just a little longer while 4 batteries are getting over-cooked.
So a voltage reducer is best. |

Since I have a 48 volt system, how would I hook it up and where would I place the reducer in the cart? Thanks again. |

Re: Accessories wiring question
You need a 48v to 12v reducer. Don't be fooled by the 16v to 12v reducer they still only drain off of 2 batteries. You would mount it to the frame behind the seats near the controller somewhere.

Re: Accessories wiring question
Make sure you get one that can handle the amps. Too low will be a problem.

Re: Accessories wiring question
If you are just using headlights and tail lights, there is no need for a voltage converter/reducer. It doesn't matter which of the 2 of the batteries in series you use. EZGO's standard wiring is to tap 2 batteries without a converter.
My cart has been wired like this for 10 years and I have 6 year old batteries with no imbalance and still go 36 holes with plenty left. The analog 36v voltmeter you have should be across the 1st and 6th batteries or through the ignition switch and battery 1. There is no need to switch your batteries around to even them out, they are series wired. Here is the EZGO wiring diagram for your reference: http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/e...ringLights.jpg |

Re: Accessories wiring question
Thanks, Doug for your answer. The only prob. with this is my cart was upgraded from 36 to 48. I think that may make a difference.
And, Scotty, I found a couple of 48/36/12 volt 10 amp voltage reducers on ebay (reputable sellers, new products). They cost between $60 and $80. I'm looking into this. It doesn't say if I can hook up both the lighting and the voltmeter to this reducer. I suppose I could, but not sure. Thanks guys for your help! |

Re: Accessories wiring question
Voltmeter goes across all 36 volts, hook your -neg side to the main -neg of the pack and then the + side into the key switch so it only comes on when you turn the key on.

Re: Accessories wiring question
Thanks Golfcartfixer. I never would've thought to hook it up to the key switch. I appreciate the input.

Re: Accessories wiring question
Add the total amperage of accessories you plan to use & the converter must be able to handle that amperage. I was warned those 10amp converters just aren't large enough.
