Default I'm stuck. Duh

On my '84 EZ GO Marathon....

Changed the resistor
Got all new batteries
Got all new cables
Replaced the ignition switch
Cleaned up the crud from spilled battery acid (prev. owner had all the cell caps OFF! and ran it that way)
Removed the light wiring temporarily
Replaced the charger outlet and cables

Wired it up per the wiring diagram here on the forum

Turned the key..........ta-daaah! Nothing.

Here's the thing: Prev owner had replaced 2.5 HP motor with a 5.5HP and put in 8 volt batteries. He did not change the solenoid or the forward and reverse switch assembly. He drove it that way for over 6 years ( I saw him drive it last year).

I'm wondering if I need to change the F&R and the solenoid?
Do they need to be changed together? Can I change the solenoid without changing the F&R?

I think I have my work cut out for me. :(

I'm not sure which posts on the solenoid to jump to test it or how to go about it, even after reading the threads here on it.

I need help. Thanks so much.

Pat

Pat..Just my 2 cents worth. If it was a 36 volt cart and the previous owner changed batteries to 48 volt, then you probably will have a fired sylenoid. Try taking a set of jumper cables (like used to jump a car), using only the positive clamps, place one each on the large posts (there should be two), turn on the key and press the pedal. Make sure you have the rear wheels up off the floor. Also take a multimeter and turn on the key, place it in either F or R and check for power at the small wire connections on the sylenoid. You may have to press the pedal for this as well. Remeber tires off the floor, you don't want it to lauch you into something and do more damage. And yes you can change the sylenoid without having to change out the F/R switch (providing the F/R switch is good). If any of the sparkie experts has better info please speak up. Good luck and let us know.

Hey Rodgers!! Thanks for taking the time to reply at such a late hour.

I was told a heavy-duty F and R is needed (ebay seller with good rep) so I messaged him to see if he could recommend a solenoid that would be appropriate as well as the F and R assembly.

What the heck, I may as well rebuild everything. Those are the only 2 items not upgraded by prev. owner or replaced by me.

My local golf cart dealer can't advise me on what solenoid to use, so I hope this ebay seller can help me.

Thanks again.
