Still have burning smell
Hey guys I have another question. I asked the other day about why i have a burning smell when i ran my cart for a bit. And some said for me to check the speed controll board and the wiper arm i did this and cleaned all the copper studs, but do the studs need to be completly cleaned down to like new copper or just cleaned off.And my guess is they need to be smooth and not roughed up correct? Well after i got things back together and a test run i still had a burning smell???? Now could this be the resistors getting hot and a stupid question the resistors they do get hot right???? Because all this stuff is probbly all orginal from 76. And finely would i just be better off to just replace the board with new studs and the wiper arm also thinking about just replaceing the silinoid to. Sorry for the long info just need some things ansered Thanks again for all the help Ezcome Ezgo

Re: Still have burning smell
Check your battery terminals and make sure that's not the burning smell. Happened to me.

the wiper contact the stationary lugs the resistor coils all battery & motor cables The F&R was not original and still in good shape. Now she runs like it is 1985 again All of these parts are available from any one of the bgw sponsors..... GO for it, resistor parts are reasonable |

Re: Still have burning smell
Yes, it is entirely possible that the resistors are causing the smell. They convert the excess power to heat. If there is something on the resistor coils, they may cause a burning smell. Make sure they're clean and in good shape. If nothing else, they'll be clean

Re: Still have burning smell
Its accually very rare to have to replace all the stationary contacts on the older speed control boards.
Take a file and file the contacts smooth, keep the file on all, or most of the contacts as you do this and you will get them all smooth again. Movable contact you can file smooth, but if it is down to 1 inch in lenth, its time to be replaced. Resistor coils, if they have something on them, I.E. Wd-40, grease, will cause a burning smell, but will usually be gone after just a few short trips. |
