EZ-GO brake adjustment

Hi,

My brake cables on my 1994 Marathon were sticking, so I bought new ones. At the same time cleaned both brakes. Brakes seem to work well (paddle finally comes back completely and wheels are free when brake is released). However, to have enough thread to place the jam nut on the compensator there is almost no cable slack (pedal only has about 1/4" of free travel). Also, the brake equalizer linkage is uneven (passenger side cable is tighter than driver side cable). Ez-go manual says it should not be more than 1/8" off parallel, but mine is about 3/8" off parallel. New cables are exactly the same as the old ones. Checked brake pad installation and seems right (wider side of pads up, shorter pad towards the front). Automatic adjusters also are out about equal number of threads). Epair and service manual does not have any suggestions what causes it (suspect the above two problems are related).

Anyone any ideas?

Your rear suspension is not tweeked is it? like maybe a loose u-bolt or shackles bent. just a thought

Nope. Rear suspension is original, and everything looks right and secure.

where the brake cables attach to the drum are they able to move the same amount back and forth?

Yes they do. It does seem that the passenger side break arem (where the cable connects) sits back slightly more than the driver side (but not nearly enough to explain the difference in the equalizer)

All clips on the new cables secure and in the right place? If you pull the cables tight and install the nut do the brakes drag? I am only throwing ideas out there for you to check as i don't have an ez-go. just going by similarity in your problem that i had. My lift caused my prob w/ the cables being too tight along with the self adjuster mechanism problem. like i was told the first time or two i posted my problem,"brakes are'nt rocket science",but most of us ignore them till the problem starts and then get that scratch your head and
a55 syndrome.

Appreciate the suggestions! Double-checked the clips and they are on correctly. I could get the locking nut on, but there will be very little slack left...

You said this isn't a lifted cart right? when you could put the nut on you say there is not much slack,but let's say you do put it on does it pull the brakes so that they drag without peddle pressure?

Yep. Cart is not lifted. I just played with the adjustments to see if I can get the locking nut on, but the brakes do start to drag a little...

Passenger side brake also seems to lock a little sooner than the driver side brakes.

Anyone any other suggestions?

We need to get this problem resolved! I am having the exact same issue.

The brake equalizer is uneven, very tight and not enough threads to put both nuts on. When I tighten the nuts enough to get both of them on, the brakes are both pressed down enough that they are locked.

Suggestions or ideas?
