Default Help with battery charger

My father-in-law has an older EZ Go golf cart, 36 volt. His charger is run by a timer, it will never get below 3-4 volts when charging. I'm sure he probably has at least one bad battery.
My question is....if he had all new batteries, and he had the charger on for 3 hours, and the batteries are fully charged before that time is up, would the amp reading go to zero and quit charging even tho the timer is still running?

~Thanks for any info you can give me~

Test the batteries or set the timer for 12 hours and see if it goes off .......... you may not be giving it enough time?

New and old batteries will not get fully recharged in 3 hours, heck, no battery pack for that matter.....

ok, I might have said it wrong about the 3 hours, I was just trying to find out if the charger would quit charging when the pack was fully charged even tho the "timer" was still showing time left on the charger "gauge".
Sorry Goofy...I just spent $700 on 6 8volt Trojan T-890's for my CC! If I have to buy the father-in-law new batt's to, I'll be tapped out!

scottyb,

You say that no batteries will charge in 3 hours, but with my 2002 PDS cart the charger will shutoff around 3-4 hours after being discharged to about 50%, the charger shuts off no matter what at about 10 amps. The batteries appear to be charged by the state of charge sheet and I get aprox. 13-15 miles on a charge in a hilly neighborhood and at the hunting camp. The batteries are 2008 energizers and they all passed with a 100 amp load meter, could there be a problem with the charger always shutting off at 10 amps? I would think it would go lower and stay on longer. Is there anything else I should check???
