Default Battery filling (water or battery acid)

When talking to another electric cart owner, if he needed to add water to his batteries, he filled them with battery acid rather then distilled water. Is this a good idea??? Will it extend battery life or reduce it?? What are the ramifications??

My battery Rep tells me you only put acid in the batteries one time at the beginning of their life to start the reaction. From then on you add water as needed. You can add electrolyte which is a solution of acid and water to help booster a cell... but the cell has to be in decent shape to benefit from this .... so 'should you add acid to your batteries?' Not according to my sources ...... what are you other guys hearing?

I agree. You only add distilled water. Never add tap water to a battery, the contaminants in tap water will eventually destroy a battery. I know, TMI, sorry? I have just seen so many people add tap water to batteries not knowing that it will kill the battery.

Some tap water has a high mineral content. This is what harms the batteries.... minerals like iron distilled water is the safest bet.

You are exactly right about the iron. Especially here in the south. Alot of iron in the water.

The acid should last the lifetime of the battery, as long as the correct concentration was put in to start. If you have batteries that boiled over a few times, you could be a little diluted after adding more distilled water but that is a rare occurance. If you can't get the specific gravity up to 1.265 @75F (with a full charge), then you either have low acid or a bad battery. If you have a battery pack that was constantly overfilled and boiled over during charging, they could very well have a low acid content.
