ok my question is , I know I have an old golf cart with a resistor coil
if I only want to change that part, to make this cart go faster , what would I need. Coluld I up the coil guages or storten then , is there a product out there that can help with the speed of the cart now please remember back this is an older cart no controller , so all of your input would be appreciated Thanks 36 volt ezgo golfcart 1989

The resistors do not control top speed.. When the pedal is on the floor, the resistors are out of the circuit.. The resistors are only in the circuit before the pedal hits the floor.. Bumping it up to 48V will increase top speed, at the risk of burning up the resistors..

The biggest improvement I got out of my 1988 cart was upgrading from 6g to 4g wire. I build them out of jumper cables from Lowes. Bigger tires will get ya higher top speed, but will reduce climbing, pulling and will be harder to stop

New bigger cables, we all suggest welders cable, #4 for all but the biggest controllers, will increase the amperage flow to the motor at any given point.....That will increase torque... speed is gonna cost ya

Check the batteries for full charge (voltage, sg) then go for a run. When you return, check the components for heat (all wires, solenoid, F/R switch, speed board) and if nothing is getting warm then you are at the max for that cart (10-12mph). IMO, Nothing you can do including adding 4ga wires is gonna give noticeable improvement. You need to bump up the voltage to 48V as CC-John suggests. I don't think the increased voltage is gonna hurt the resistors. I run 48V booster, as mentioned in an earlier post, with no problems but it is wired as a booster so it is only used on hills.

To install a controller in your cart would require a complete rework of the entire electrical system.. Not cost effective on that old of cart.. You're looking at close to $1000 to convert that old resistor system to a solid-state electronic controller system..

Anybody running 48v in a resistor cart or a 5 solenoid cart has a lesson to learn sooner or later

Yes you can upgrade to a 400a controller .... you will also need to upgrade your V-gilde to a multistep or replace it with a better yet PB-6 Potentiometer....Prolly a solenoid upgrade too
I hope this helps
