Default Motor failure causes

I need some help. I have 20 electric E-Z-Go's that I rent out, but I'm not a mechanic and I think my head mechanic is trying to pull a fast one on me.

He told me we needed a new controller in a PDS model. I bought a rebuilt one to save a few bucks and he installed it. On the test drive the motor burned up. He claims it was a faulty controller. The vendor says that a faulty controller CANNOT result in an overheated motor and agreed to replace the controller, but won't accept any responsibility for the motor.

So, my questions are:

1. Can a faulty controller result in motor overheating?
2. What else could cause motor failures due to overheating/burning?

Thanks!

Non-mechanic

1. Short answer, YES

2. old/Worn Brushes, loose connections at the power terminals, Broken wire internally, bad commutator bearing........

Long story short, the bad/failing motor probably caused your original controller to fail in the first place.......

That being said, the fact that your lead mechanic failed to notice a failing motor isn't grounds to terminate him. He found a faulty controller, the first reaction is to replace the faulty device, He did what any parts changer would do. This isn't his fault, sometimes these things just happen.....

I have seen a few PDS motors take out controllers. Like everyone else i replace the controller and notice right away the cart isn't right either with speed or power. When i find this i have the motor rebuilt.

I have seen a few overreved motors (going down hill too fast) and it spike the controller. Yes these were on a PDS cart.
